However last night, channel-hopping, we came across Original Star Trek and I said 'Hey, let's watch' (I have never watched any Star Trek, except for some of the new movies). It's DELIGHTFUL. Quite like Classic Who, except everyone takes everything terribly seriously (like half the shorts are Very Serious Reaction Shots) and they had a budget Doctor Who could only dream of. (Darcy: "Half of the budget went on the make up.")

Alas, cake makes me sick now, but I took the day off work and took my Switch to the garden at the cathedral, where a kid proceeded to ask me what I was playing and then we talked about video games for 30 minutes, and then I made a berry crumble, which has low enough sugar to keep me functional.

Today there's a big extended family reunion/gathering (outside), which will be good as I've not seen most of these people in two years. OTOH, I've not seen most of these people in two years and they were always an overwhelming crew even before we all became horribly socially out of shape.

I played Portal back when the last video game I'd even touched was a decade ago, so it is doable . . . The upside of Portal is when you find yourself stuck in a corner because you literally can't figure out how to walk, you just shoot a portal at the wall and escape. And it's just a stupidly good game, as evidenced by the fact that I was willing to work past the getting stuck in corners because I didn't know how to walk.

I loved RTD's thoughts on Who vs. Trek in Writer's Tale. And yes, the exact balance of seriousness (earnestness?) and camp is crucial to the Star Trek formula. Both must be there. It is instantly identifiable but also so easy to get wrong (this is what thrilled me about the Chris Pine reboot (first movie only)--they nailed it.)

Actually, the properly interesting thing about "Proton" is that I have been enduringly impervious to nicknames my whole life. Not through any dislike of them--they just never stick to me. This might be the first.
