Update from the house of Plague (Day 129 Year 2) FINAL POST



Sure our holiday plans got cancelled, but I've still got TIME OFF and I can feel my whole body slowly decompressing. Whatever shall I do with all this time??? We haven't made any plans yet, and going anywhere will be expensive (ETA: Sitting on the sofa for 2 weeks & watching the Olympics is of course an option), but I'm thinking I might try to actually sort out my novel. I have a draft but it needs work...

Anyway. Since this is the last post I figure I could throw LOTS the links at you, since I've been collecting them for a good while. (Well some of them.)

OLYMPICS

Yay Olympics! Nothing will ever be as good as 2012 (sigh) (yes I'm biased, we got tickets for the Paralympics and it was MAGICAL and the UK wasn't the absolute dystopian nightmare it is now, my GOD it's so depressing to remember how wonderful things were?), but since I was at work today I couldn't watch the opening ceremony live (will catch up tonight). Darcy & the girls however watched the whole thing, and the girls apparently brought out the globe and had a lot of fun trying to find all the different nations as they paraded in. How's that for edutainment? ;)

ETA: OK watched all the 'good bits' (i.e. skipped the athletes walking in & the speeches). I had seen comments about THE DRONES, and they were not wrong. The drones were utterly amazing. The girls' favourite part was the pictograms (which were also completely brilliant, although in a very different way), and then I got all choked up when it got to the torch & the lighting of the cauldron. It's good to remember hope and optimism. (Then we went back & watched the lighting of 'our' cauldron in 2012 and wallowed in nostaliga.)

ETA2: Sure there is a feeling of fiddling while Rome the planet burns, but on the other hand THE PLANET IS BURNING and and flooding and there is a plague and honestly watching Simone Biles being out-of-this-world talented is... nice.

Daily Dimash: Olimpico

I've been keeping this song in reserve because it's one of THE songs, and then I realised that the Olympics were actually happening and everything converged perfectly. THIS SONG. Just the power and the beauty of it, I canNOT. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Olimpico (also known as Ogni Pietra) is the first work that Igor Krutoy (music) and Liliya Vinogradova (lyrics) created specifically for Dimash. It's an opera-style piece (the lyrics are in Italian) and was written for the Opening ceremony of the 2nd European Games in Minsk in 2019. It's one of those 'only Dimash could sing this' songs, since it's written for baritone and soprano. Lyrics here, they're very inspirational.

This is the same performance as above (the Arnau concert) but it combines the concert footage with fancam (so you get lots of Dimash's face being INTENSE) and also has subtitles in several different languages.

From New Wave (Sochi 2019). Where all the other stagings are very dark this one's all white & very Olympian:



Fancam from his New York concert (December 10, 2019). Honestly, seeing him live is top of my wishlist. I get goosebumps listening to this, just the sheer raw power and beauty.



Finally, included for completion, the actual premiere of the piece (2nd European Games in Minsk). I feel I must make a note of the gorgeous outfit (the Kazakh flag is beautiful), but alas the sound quality of the video is shockingly bad. :(

Honestly, while Chernobyl was undoubtedly a grim topic for a series I found it to be rather hopeful. People stepped forward to do the right thing because it was necessary -- literally at the cost of their lives and professional futures. Millions were saved because a few handfuls were heroic. What's most amazing in 2021 is that it was a true story.

Chernobyl is one of the series' that I keep meaning to watch, but haven't yet. I'm glad to hear you say it's hopeful, that might help me finally get to it...

Mmm, I remember watching a programme/documentary about Chernobyl now - the wildlife is abundant (and healthy) and there are even people living there, despite everything.

Unfortunately I suspect that the willingness to do the right thing at the cost of one's standing and personal benefit is not a quality that leads to people reaching high office.

We have continued to wear masks in my household, just because we realize that though we may be protected, we can still contract and transmit the variant without our knowledge. It is just common sense and care for others in our minds. But it seems that thinking is...odd these days. :(

Well stick with it! You can still get sick (like Miss M) and it's not fun. :( Plus masks/sanitiser etc protects from other illnesses! (There was a thin in the papers here a little while ago about norovirus going round - which spreads through air/touch - and I am NEVER not wearing a mask! *g*)

I saw a few snippets of the opening ceremony, but today I watched the men's road race from only a few k in until the end. Still odd without crowds, but less so than empty stadia and gymnastics halls.

PS - I meant to link to my favourite LotR fan vid to add to your collection, but Alexa told me my oven timer was up and I went to the kitchen, stayed there for ages, came back and just hit 'post' without it.

It's been nice to have a through-line of sorts. And I like collecting links... I'm glad people have enjoyed my posts. (And will definitely be back to posting at some point. Having a break is nice.)

And I totally agree about 2012 and the Olympics, the last time I really felt proud about this country. Oh god what a mess we are now.
It was all so hopeful and... joyous. *sigh* The contrast is just insane.

And we were lucky enough to get tickets to the Archery (early rounds) it was such a wonderful feeling.
Oh wow! It was the most amazing sensation to actually BE there, I'll always be grateful that we managed it too.
