Update from the house of Plague (Day 127 Year 2)
In weather news:
England heatwave: Giant hail in Leicestershire damages cars
In football/racism news:
The Tories are learning that culture wars make you enemies as well as friends
The backlash against the government’s stance on England players taking the knee shows there is a cost to its “anti-woke” strategy.
It's even being written about in America:
Racist trolls attacked England’s soccer team. Fans fought back.
Facebook’s and Twitter’s sluggish reactions show how they still rely on users to combat hate speech.
And this tweet stood out. Can we hope that change might actually be happening?
It honestly makes me cry to see so many non-POC, who haven't experienced something like this directly stand up for Bukayo and point out one of many microagressions that we face in our day to day life. And publicly call it for what it is, racism. I never thought I would see it pic.twitter.com/WQIGZX8rlI

If you have any un-vaccinated people around you, this article might help. It has actual advice towards the end:
“One of the last things they do before they’re intubated is beg me for the vaccine. I hold their hand and tell them that I’m sorry, but it’s too late.”https://t.co/Mm7SVMqtig

She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has been trending again...
Serious thread:
Apologies for posting a JKR tweet, but because this is so much in the lit discourse:

1. There is no excuse for threatening to bomb someone. None.
2. It is a separate and also true statement that conflating "trans activists" with violence is disingenuous and dangerous. pic.twitter.com/Q5HZnsmdWU
Very silly thread if you need a laugh:
JK Rowling: hello children
— The Midnight Society (@midnight_pals) July 20, 2021
Poe: oh hey
Poe: oh hey look who it is
Poe: guess we’re doing this again
Poe: this old song and dance
Rowling: I've been ssssilenced
Poe: yeah here we go
And where all the transphobia of the past few years is coming from (follow link to article)...
The transphobia JK Rowling espouses today was meticulously orchestrated by U.S. evangelical Christians.

Here's the @splcenter's coverage of a conservative conference attended by Trump in 2017 in which they introduced their master plan:https://t.co/XuQS1Kzl5a
And finally a lovely thread refuting all of JKR's 'arguments':
THREAD: From Facebook:
— Sooz Kempner (@SoozUK) June 11, 2020
Cut & pasted - with permission - from a trans friend who didn't want her name attached because, understandably, she's sick of arguing about this. Basically, she was approached by a cis friend asking Why Are People Unhappy With JK Rowling.
Daily Dimash: Blizzard Again
Almost impossible to choose a song tonight, but in the end the ridiculousness of posting a song about snow in the middle of a heatwave won out. :)
He first sang it at the Slavic Bazaar back in 2015:
And again at Bastau in 2017:
The fans (of course) have made a lovely music video with lots of OTT pretty pictures, but also with subtitles.
ETA: And in Kazakh:

Boy, that is such a telling statement!
Crucially, this time ministers don’t have the largest megaphone.
I love how this argument conveniently elides the issue of why they have the biggest megaphone. Just like the earlier statement "First, they make sure this cultural dispute is the topic discussed on the morning broadcast rounds that set the news agenda for the day, rather than pesky issues such as rising Covid-19 cases or the lack of financial support for people self-isolating." That's news to me that the politicians make the decisions for the news media of what they're going to cover. They could choose to ignore this BS and instead focus on exactly those issues (or, for that matter, a ton of other important news that gets neglected due to such a focus on COVID reporting). But that would mean taking responsibility by how they use these talking points for their own financial benefit.
I'm also reminded of Jason Sudeikis being asked by Stephen Colbert about a t-shirt he wore to a premiere which listed the names of the 3 affected England players. He pointed out that he only wore a shirt.

Not even trying to be subtle...

*snort* Most of our media is owned by Rupert Murdoch, so it's all right-leaning, foreign-people/trans etc etc blaming reporting. And the BBC has been known to be called 'the Boris Broadcasting Corporation'. Not that I want to abolish it, but... There is definitely a tendency to report 'The government said this' without going into whether that is true or not. (This icon will never not be relevant, alas.)

I haven't watched Colbert in way too long...

...I'm sorry. What? NO. There is no way that she's not still a little kid. I can't possibly have known you that long.
(The two boys in my icon are now taller than me, for the record.)

*laughs* Welcome to my life. Although on the plus side 'little kids' rarely clean kitchens, so I'm not complaining.

No, they were just born!! I am sure of it.

Ohhhh, my gosh. Further proof that we ARE a global community - and while that can be a good thing, just like viral spread, misinformation and hatred can fan across the globe and be a very, VERY BAD THING.
Then there is support and love and sense of humanity from across the world to counter those bad things... Just goes to show, even when it feels like you can do nothing but despair, hope and love will find a way to shed light into the darkness.

The next day she cleaned all the windows, and the oven. Today she is helping her father, so that's okay too. :)

Yeah. We just have to try to amplify the good and suppress the bad.

here's to hoping for more of this!
