Update from the house of Plague (Day 109 of Year 2)
ME FROM LAST YEAR: Your summer going better?
— Hunter Felt (@HunterFelt) July 2, 2021
ME NOW: Good news: there's a vaccine
ME FROM LAST YEAR: Oh good so...
ME NOW: ...But the virus has mutated. Also it's 100 degrees every day and the water is on fire.
ME FROM LAST YEAR: The water is-
ME NOW: The water is on fire. Yes. https://t.co/K6pXECDZYo
Couldn’t find ANYTHING on the BBC (it’s now 7pm, they’ve had a day!) so here is a link from ABC:
Video shows fire in Gulf of Mexico after gas pipeline rupture
In order not to fall into inconsolable depression, a comedy sketch from 1991 which is still impossibly on the nose. With endless thanks to Owls who brought it to my attention:
There are a lot of comments saying it looks like a disaster movie and it made me think… Hm, how to put it. Superhero movies/stories feel continually less relevant. Unless it’s pure fantasy or metaphor or whatever, but a big mustache twirling villain wanting to blow up the world just seems… superfluous? Especially the ending where everyone is all ‘Oh yay, we saved the world!’ Like — no? The world is a clusterfuck and we seem dead-set destroying the planet and embracing the most dystopian of futures, saving it from one supervillain with some dodgy plan just returns us to the status quo of being busy setting our home on fire (and letting poor people pay for it). The bad guys don’t have lairs, they have boardrooms, and we have known this forever. (Also the whole fist-fight-to-save-the-world is a trope I tear out my hair over. We just have to hope that the good guy happens to punch harder, yay!)
This all ties in with The Boys — it’s a show with superheroes, but no super villains (beyond what they create themselves, mostly with racism) (and I mean that quite, QUITE literally). It takes the world we have and says ‘Superheroes wouldn’t solve anything.’
Anyway, Greta Thunberg did a brilliant speech at Austrian World Summit. I especially love 'the pandemic has very clearly shown that you have never treated global warning as an actual emergency!' >:(
And since it's sort of on the same topic, two articles from the BBC:
Turkey's plastics ban: Where does the UK send its waste now?
Comedian Joe Lycett says he staged TV walkout as a plastics protest
Daily Dimash: Qairan Elim
Sticking with the theme, have a song & video about his love of his homeland, showcasing its beauty. As far as I know Dimash helped to direct. Thanks to plotting out this post since this morning, I've had the song in my head all day! :)

The spoken intro which (for some reason) does not have subtitles:
"The Great Steppe... I praise your rich lands. Altai and Atyrau, Zhaiyk and Ili, Alatau and Saryarka - what expanses of my native land that has witnessed my happy years! I am talking about the Great Steppe - the golden cradle of the Turkic world. Hey, silent world! Do not hold your breath! You have descendants who never hesitated and did not stand aside during fierce disputes and confrontations. This land has an owner - a kind character and generous soul of whom could not spoil or break this changeable world with its distorted values. The Great Steppe has a guardian spirit, unknown to a stranger, incomprehensible to an outsider."
ETA: Alternative translation:
Introductory Narration of Qairan Elim Read by Yisbek Abilmazhinov
Great steppe ... I'm talking about that great steppe, where the four sides of the world converged. I'm talking about the vastness and breadth of the spreading steppes from Altai and Atyrau, Zhaiyk and Ile, Alatau and Saryarka. I'm talking about the Earth, where the Turkic tribe originates. Eh, world, relax. There are descendants who survived after bloody wars and strife, descendants are still alive who, despite the difficulties, have not lost their hospitality, generosity, descendants are still alive - the patrons of the Great Steppe, which is unfathomable to strangers."
English translation: Anna Ludwig-k
ETA: The author of the intro speaks about how it came to be written:
Dimash also performed Qairan Elim on May 1st The Unity of Nations Day
The Cradle of the Turkic world - Turkestan Celebration Concert dedicated to the Unity of the Nations Day. The national holiday symbolizes friendship and mutual understanding between all the ethnic groups living in Kazakhstan.

"The water is on fire" is this year's "fire tornadoes," I guess.
Next year: fire sharks!

It's INSANE. Genuine disaster movie stuff.

Probably not, no. When one thinks of the pandemic it's their day job skills that would be most useful -- Tony Stark's money and distribution capability, Bruce Banner's science skills, Cap's celebrity and social influence, Thor's ties to higher development science assistance, etc.

Thank you. And yeah, the only reason I know about that fire is Twitter - I haven't seen anything on the BBC...

Mmm, good point. In The Boys (if you haven't watched it) all the superheroes are managed by a single corporation, whose main goal is making money.

Oh yes. Meant to add something in the post about 'Look at me putting all this together!' - miles and miles better.
