Year 2 of Lockdown, Day 69 (A good day for singers to be born)

Honorary Bob Dylan mention:

However this is a post to celebrate new talent (or rather, unknown to me until recently, talent!). I give you Dimash Kudaibergen (born 24 May 1994, so he is turning 27 today). Quick background from wiki:

He is a Kazakh singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He is university trained in classical as well as contemporary music, and is known for his exceptionally wide vocal range (6 octaves). He was brought up in a very musical family and was thus trained from a young age. (I'll post a longer bio at some point. The main point is: He is incredibly talented, and exceptionally well trained and skillfull.) He rose to fame in China with his participation as a "wildcard competitor" in Hunan TV's The Singer 2017 when he was 22.

This was his first performance, S.O.S. d'un terrien en détresse. This is... possibly my favourite song ever, words cannot describe:

Same as above, but including behind the scenes:

(The following morning his life changed when he got 600 Million hits on Weibo the Chinese Twitter/Instagram, and he needed security guards from then on...)

I am... not surprised. I came across him about a month ago, and goodness but it is the most rewarding musical experience ever. So I figured I ought to share! :) Trying to work out how to go about it (there is a LOT of music) I thought that the best thing would be a 'Daily Dimash' segment in my daily posts. Like I used to have art works - something beautiful to balance out the depressing news. Starting with the performances on The Singer (there are 14) and then... well, I'll figure out a way to choose. Possibly just going eeny-meeny-miny-mo. But with background info where available (bearing in mind I'm still new to this, so might miss things).

Dimash has performed S.O.S many times (most recently at Biden's inauguration). This is his performance at the Slavic Bazaar (Vitebsk, Belarus, July 2018) and is the most flawless performance I have seen. I keep going back and forth as to which one is my favourite - this one, or his first one. (There are MANY OTHERS, but I figured two were enough for this post.) I'll let Matthew of Boostd sum it up:

"If this song, this performance, isn’t what I hear when I am arriving at the gates of Heaven — if I’m not greeted by Dimash, singing this performance — I want God to send me back like an amazon package. This is the only thing I will accept at the gates of Heaven."

ETA: Here he is performing it for the Tokyo Jazz Festival 2020. Due to covid this was online, so he is on his own, in his little studio, singing almost to himself. <3

ETA2: This is the version from the Digital Show, 2021, and might be the best one so far:

The song itself has quite a history, if you are curious you can find out more about the original writer and performer here:

And this is the story of the young French singer who inspired Dimash to sing the song:

NOW. I first came across Dimash because of youtube reactors, so I feel they need a turn in the spotlight also. SOS has ENDLESS reactions on youtube, but I narrowed my selection down to four, all of which bring something different and are entertaining in their own unique ways:

This is one of my favourite reactions of all time. I just. *hands* He is also very knowledgeable about music and singing, so it's also a very informative reaction, in between all the flailing:

This one is almost the opposite. It's an Irish singer who is too delightful for words (he starts every video with 'It's ME! BARRY!'), and he is just stunned into silence. <3

Then there are these guys. They are a band and this reaction is just... I can't even. If you need to laugh, watch this.

Finally I give you these three singing coaches who are all very insightful and incredibly watchable:

ETA: New reaction. Excellent & in-depth. (It's his 2nd Dimash song, he already watched Adagio):

And that's enough for today. *g* (Tomorrow's will be shorter, I promise.)

ETA: Reaction to the performance at the Slavic Bazar, where the above quote has been taken from:

ETA2: Realised I should probably include the reaction that first introduced me...

COME JOIN ME! Flailing encouraged. (The fans have light-up headbands and chocolate.) (No really, he has his own chocolate. The fans are called 'the Dears' and they are terribly lovely and terribly devoted. I send them much love.)

And I finally have a bucket list: I want to go to one of Dimash's concerts.

Just wait. You haven't seen anything yet.

Goodness! That's a gorgeous voice, not just because of its technical bravura, but because he knows how to do things with dynamics. Thanks for introducing me to him!
