As a historian I’m awed by how GREAT a job humanity is doing now, the first pandemic where we’ve understood hygiene, hand-washing, where we’ve had actions we could take.

ETA: Also, DO watch Grayson's Art Club (link goes to ep 2). One of the most lovely and uplifting things around. And their cat looks a lot like ours. Right down to the idiot vacant stare where you can see their single braincell rolling around.
In 1847 the Choctaw Nation, fresh off the Trail of Tears, heard of the Irish Famine and sent every cent they could.

Today, their covid-19 appeal is peppered with message after message of gratitude and fellowship from Irish donors.
They didn't forget us. We won't forget them. https://t.co/X99x6fY1Zp

Good one Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson! Way to make something positive out of a bad experience!

It's good to remember that kindness lasts and can mean more than hate.

Tom Hanks could end up starring in a Corona-movie... as himself. ;)

Also love the historian's comment, because indeed it's really amazing how much we're able to do about it compared to many past pandemics, and how people are also taking responsibility. People often forget/don't realize for how short a time we've really been able to figure out how diseases spread and how to prevent them to save lives en masse. It's good to remember how much is already being done even if not every action is going to be a correct one.

*nods* Most governments have acted quickly and carefully.

It's good to remember that we *are* doing better than in the past. Even if some countries are being stupid...

... I hadn't seen that in the art!! And yes, good things. We have to pay attention to the good.
But even more, I am afraid, I love the bookshelves!
They are VERY brilliant.

The Irish are good 'uns, and Tom Hanks can go on to make a movie starring himself. ;)
That bookshelf is genius!
Isn't it just? I love it.

We remember the kindness of their act, the equivalent of sending us half their GDP or some similar astronomical amount, and they after recovering from a famine of their own. ♥ the Choctaws. And we do not forget the absolute cruelty and outright theft of the Landlords in London.
Anyway... yeah...

Colour me not surprised. >:( (Much like in America there is this massive cognitive dissonance about 'this is not who we are'. Yes, it's who the English have been for a long, long, long time.)
I learned this at Primary School Level, so age, what 8? 10? And I will never forget this kindness. There is a monument down in Cork to commemorate the Choctaw Nation's kindness to us during The Great Hunger, and last year or the year before there was a scholarship unveiled specifically for First Nations students to come to Irish Universities.
♥ I love how kindness lasts.
