Update from The House of Plague, Day 44
One of the unexpected gifts of Lockdown was Ralph Vaughan Williams:
He rises and begins to round,
He drops the silver chain of sound,
Of many links without a break,
In chirrup, whistle, slur and shake.
For singing till his heaven fills,
'Tis love of earth that he instils,
And ever winging up and up,
Our valley is his golden cup
And he the wine which overflows
to lift us with him as he goes.
Till lost on his aerial rings
In light, and then the fancy sings.
(From The Lark Ascending by George Meredith)
From Tumblr:
If you could have groceries and internet– Pick where to spent your quarantine in complete isolation.

For me - G, no question. (I look at it and just think 'South Downs cottage'.)

I love Vaughan Williams. There was a very good BBC4 documentary about him a few years ago which is worth looking out for. We saw his widow at the Proms in the early 2000s and it was quite strange to think even then that she was still alive.

LOL. We all have to make sacrifices. ;)

Oooh, I'll see if I can hunt it down.

Oh wow. The past is so much nearer than expected. Am rather jealous.
(Sorry I am so rubbish at commenting! I do read your posts, but posting daily takes... a surprising amount of time? So I neglect other things.)

I knew I'd written about seeing Ursula Vaughan Williams at a Prom and I've just found it. It was in 2007 and not very long before she died. The entry is here if you are interested.

If you like Vaughan Williams I really recommend Hodie at Christmas. It's one of my absolute favourite pieces of Christmas music and we play it every year. Not quite the season for it yet though :)

Thank you! (I'd love to hear his Fifth in concert...)

I shall add it to my list of Michael Buble! :)
