My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark

Fell down the rabbit hole of youtube videos, but this is the one that just hit me in all the best ways. And dear GOD the way it hits the beats! Apparently it was the vidder's first effort, which I find hard to believe, it's amazingly confident and well-edited (go to youtube and watch it bigger):

Apart from the title, then 'My childhood spat back the monster that you see' is also one of the most Doctor-y lines I have ever come across. Features the 9th, 10th and 11th Doctor. Enjoy.

I've always thought of this as exclusively a Ten song (I'm sure you can guess why), but it's really well made!

Speakin' of pimpin' : I re-watched ‘Fear Me, I Killed All Of Them' recently and oh yes, it really is magnificent. The craft involved managed to overcome my general indifference towards the band and the oversaturation of its songs; I actually really like the song now because of the video. I don’t know, third time’s the charm? (It happens with films too: I was pretty neutral about Edward Scissorhands and V for Vendetta the first time I watched them. Upon rewatch I was like “THIS IS SO AMAZING!”) Or your beautiful meta helped, such things often do (shrug). Anyway, I have recommended it –along with your meta– in my “20 MORE MUST-Watch Whovian Videos!”. Tell the creator if you want, this is like four degrees of separation by now, impressive!

Ooooh. Can we say… that since Twelve has this whole connection with Pompeii, he *is* earth, because he is dealing with the fallout, and Ten is totally fire because he destroyed it, and they’re like, mirrors and such!
In which case, we can say that Nine is more of an Eleven mirror, and he gets the first big Everybody Lives, which foreshadows Eleven saving Gallifrey and like… the air usually contains water?... I don’t know!
Also, Nine has this whole pronounced rootless element, after the loss of his people, which is quite wind-y. And it takes him quite some time of Rose-therapy to become a bit more grounded (Another point in the Twelve-as-Earth thing, numerous times he stays at a specific place for long).

And I just remembered these wonderful quotes from the House of Flying Daggers:
“Just call me Wind. […] I wander around all alone, come and go without a trace.”

I already finished it, and am reading it for the second time. Already know that once I've finished it again I will then read it for a third time. It's magical. In the episode we watched what happened. This is a chance to look inside the people (many different people) - and inside the DOCTOR (who is also many different people) - what he thought, what he felt, a hundred, a thousand details that we never saw. Told out of sequence (it's very timey-wimey), usually having to try to figure out who the narrator is... I can't describe it. I've never read a book like it.

Also, it's incredibly funny.

See I don't really have play lists (although I like other people's, and have some amazing Master ones that I snagged back in the day).
See, it’s not exactly a playlist –though it draws inspiration from many– but I really didn’t know what else to call it. It began thusly:
Hm, if I were to make a music video for each Doctor, what music/song would I choose for each one?... I mean, I’m not going to, but damn, just hypothetically! Some songs fit so well!
Then I was like:
Damn, this is impossible, one cannot possibly COMPLETELY sum up an entire complex character with a single piece of music!... What if… a song for every series?
Which quickly became:
Fuck it, I’ll do every episode, the laws of list-making are mine and they will obey me.

To simplify matters (because serials and parts and what is episode), I’ve confined myself to New!Who. And it has to be music I already possess, I mustn’t go looking for it. Which still left me with about 8 gigabytes to work with, so.

A piece of music has to capture the feel of the episode, or what happens in it, or there must be a reference, or *something* when I listen to the song must remind me of it, but it’s not strict. It can also refer to the general story arc. It can be humorous. It can be “If I was feeling blasphemous and wanted to remove Murray Gold from the soundtrack, what would I use?” I can use two songs if I think that just one isn’t cutting it or the episode is very inspiring, etc. Film and images converted to music, hence “The Reverse Fantasia”.

(Basically, it’s very INFJ.)

Other vague rules have gradually emerged. Good villains usually steal the song selection. Chameleon Circuit songs are excluded. Songs featured on the show are excluded. Minisodes are fair game. A chosen piece of music must exist on youtube so that people can listen to it if recommended, etc.

It’s a way to show people the weird way I think, share amazing music, and give vid-makers ideas all in one.

I’d give you an example, but it’s almost complete (I won’t do after Series 10, there has to be an end), and I’d rather share it then.
But you know, think of how perfect Handlebars is for The Waters of Mars, that kind of thing. Or that board game where the ghost has to tell you who the murderer is through random pictures –but with music!

When it comes to purplefringe and such_heights, there *were* a few I hadn’t seen before and which I really enjoyed now that I went looking: Blank Space –it seems easy to make a video about the Master but apparently it isn’t, so kudos, and Suzanne was beautiful and how did I miss this song, give it to me.
Finally, Love Is Cool is a prime candidate for the Most Adorable Thing Ever, and moved me to almost Graveyard Near the House levels, though without simultaneously destroying my soul in the process (I think you’ve seen that one, right?) Much clapping.

There's such_height's Month of Ponds (scroll down a bit): individual vids for the first four episodes of S7 (you may be familiar), and moreso

fan_eunice's The Eleventy Project where she tried to make a vid for every episode of S5 (within the week after the episode aired). They are still some of my favourite vids ever. (Although you may want to avoid them until your own list is finished?)

It's from 2012... However, as far as I have been able to ascertain, there does NOT exist a Doctor/River vid to 'Tomorrow Never Dies' which is just criminal. (Yes there is one to 'Nobody Does It Better'.)

Oh yes, I’ve seen those. But even though I greatly admire such dedication, I don’t think that such a thing is for me. See, I don’t believe that most episodes contain enough by themselves to *actually* make such videos. Okay, yes, some do, but not all of them. So mine is in a purely theoretical level. Well, if I give anyone a cool idea to try out, cool, that’s beside the point, go ahead, people.

It's sort of a lot of things. Like, it has River, which is automatically wonderful. But... River is a Pond. She belongs with Ponds - her parents, Eleven. Twelve is not a Pond. He's OK, I quite like Twelve (well, S10!Twelve. S8 and S9 are... less appealing). But the juxtaposition is just jarring. It's not *my* ship, and although I can appreciate how it ties everything up, and how Twelve might have enough distance to deal with all the issues that had built up in the Doctor/River relationship, that simultaneously makes it less compelling. It ties things up nicely, most of the loose ends gathered up with a bow. It just doesn't do much for me.

F.ex. my favourite bit of the S9 soundtrack (apart from Breaking the Wall - which yes, is apparently called The Shepherd's Boy) is "A Restaurant with a View" because it's a re-working of The Enigma of River Song from the S6 soundtrack. <3

(There is more to it, but it's late & I'm sleepy now... I may write a post.)

That being said, I think we can all appreciate it as a “River Song episode with a Doctor guest appearance” as you had put it :)

Hmm, yes, but the thing is I *already* have The Enigma of River Song :) So gimme new, Murray Gold. Of course, I am still cross that the magnificent bit from The Witch’s Familiar where Twelve is going “I’m going to count to ten, and then I expect to be presented with one Clara, or I start busting motherfuckers” while poor Clara and Missy are listening from the sewers wasn’t included, and I’m pretty sure that *is* a re-working of a thing, so what do I know.
(Speaking of unreleased re-workings, check out the cool western version of Ten’s theme from Hell Bent called “Unarmed” by DoctorWhoUnreleased2015, it’s damn near perfect.)
New personal favourites –so yes, The Shepherd’s Boy and The Singing Towers are out– include but are not limited to, the very Beethoven-y “A Fly On A Painting”, “Two Events In Life”, “One Confession Away” and “Break Free”. I used to joke that Gold secretly has a TARDIS, so he grabbed the soundtrack from Barry Lyndon, went to our old friend Ludwig van and was like “Amaze me!” And that the Doctor was trying to give us a covert message in Before The Flood.
Oh, and “Harmony and Redemption” is pretty good too.

Yup that's it. And I much prefer Clara with Eleven - I'm not saying her arc with Twelve isn't fascinating, but Clara & Eleven are just adorable and fluffy, and Clara & Twelve are complicated and difficult. I have almost completed a S8-S9 re-watch (only have the final three episodes of S9 to watch and just can't get myself to watch, even though they're excellent), and yeah, just SUCH HARD WORK. :( I appreciate what those seasons do, but they're not easy viewing.

Of course, I am still cross that the magnificent bit from The Witch’s Familiar where Twelve is going “I’m going to count to ten, and then I expect to be presented with one Clara, or I start busting motherfuckers” while poor Clara and Missy are listening from the sewers wasn’t included, and I’m pretty sure that *is* a re-working of a thing, so what do I know.

Yup that's it. And I much prefer Clara with Eleven - I'm not saying her arc with Twelve isn't fascinating, but Clara & Eleven are just adorable and fluffy, and Clara & Twelve are complicated and difficult.
See, I love complicated and difficult that is textually acknowledged that it’s complicated and difficult! But I get where you’re coming from, not an easy viewing indeed, it *is* hard work.
