I'd seen Tennant in Casanova, and knew Peter Capaldi not just from the Thick of It, but also from Torchwood: Children of Earth, in which he was just phenomenal.

And I too shall say that Rory was far from limp! He's pretty much the only person who wasn't awed by the TARDIS. And that was on his first adventure! (Mickey was badly served by the narrative.)
