You want to read this! Trust me!

[livejournal.com profile] stormwreath posted Buffy, Spike, Willow: three Hero's Journeys (part 1):

"Long ago in a Usenet newsgroup far, far away, I wrote a piece comparing Buffy’s character arc to the Hero’s Journey, as described in The Hero With A Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell. I’ve been developing that, and also giving some thought to how Spike’s and Willow’s stories match up."

Reading an abbreviated version of this was what first made me urge Stephen to get an LJ, so I'm *so* happy he's finally posted it! :) Buffy's journey in particular follows Campbell's model almost to the letter - and shows why her journey wasn't complete by The Gift! Although that's still to come...

Umm... if you're in pimp mode what does that make me? But thanks anyway. :)

And most of what I posted there is new - I started out with the original Usenet post as the basis, but just kept thinking of more and more bits to add... not to mention seeing how it would apply to Spike and Willow as well.

And yes, my original concept was an argument as to why ending Buffy after season 5 would have made no artistic sense...

Thank you for the tip, this is fascinating!

I hope you don't mind that I've friended you. I followed a link from [livejournal.com profile] mommanerd's LJ to your essay on Chosen, which I thoroughly enjoyed! I've always believed that Spike was fulfilling his destiny when he fought for and regained his soul, that he willingly sacrificed himself so that Buffy could have a future, and that in doing so he discovered his ultimate purpose in life and was finally satisfied with it.
