What can YOU do?

So, I've been collecting links.

First of all, Hillary Clinton’s Popular Vote Victory Will Likely Keep Growing, and The electoral college doesn't vote until December 19th:

The Electoral College Was Designed to Prevent Trump. You Can Make This Happen.

Follow the link for more info, but very simply how do you accomplish this? Easy: Write to Republican electors in states that went red, and beg them to vote their conscience.

Goodness knows that if they declare Hillary President you might descend into civil war, but it's worth a shot? At least you will have done everything in your power. And SPREAD THE WORD!!!

There is also a Change.org petition that you can sign.

More info on dates & how the system works here.

However, this is a slim hope. So, how to prepare & start fighting back?

How to set up an anti-fascist group

And finally, two tweets about what you can do to make minorities feel safer:

Edit. Bit rushed due to lunch break. But - I think that having a dreamwidth backup is very useful. Crossposting is faffy, but considering all the hacking & monitoring, things could get difficult, and no one knows how much Trump's stooges would try to curtail communication or protests. But then dreamwidth is based in the US... I don't know. I've never had to think about these things in all seriousness before. But. I remember [profile] anniesj getting a visit from the Secret Service... Just be careful. <3

I'd forgotten about that post. The thing that bugs me the most about it is how much protection elected officials get from anonymous (or even non-anonymous) potential threats made on them and yet some other citizen going through unbelievable harassment and actual threatening actions can't get anyone to do a thing -- not social media platforms, local police, FBI or anyone. And yet we're talking about some heated discussion from more than 10 years now that somehow did. That's infuriating, but given that our president-elect engages in some of that same lack of civility we sure can't be expecting changes anytime soon.

Hi, thank you for all the links. I really appreciate them!

I wanted to add this one: http://www.nybooks.com/articles/1995/06/22/ur-fascism/

I think it is very important reading to understand all the different kinds of fascists we are currently encountering in Europe and in the USA and what connects them.

Hmm. When it comes to being picky about social media ownership and ethics, there just isn't really anywhere to go, I'm afraid. LJ is Russian owned (I recall when that all kicked off back in 2007 - 2009) In response to the LJ witch hunt (deleting fan art with underaged-looking characters) and people's LJ's being locked down, outraged people left to join Dreamwidth / Insanejournal etc in droves. I've had an account with DW for years, but I like posting photos, so it's not overly user friendly for me, though I really have tried to like it... and of course you now could say it being American-owned with DT coming into power that makes it not so great either (no offence!) But really, even if it was British owned, Britain is still a post-Brexit country with all sorts of manic shit going on in the highest levels of government...

Then to other social media platforms - notably Zuckerberg and his creepy all-devouring data mine that is Facebook. Infact I have far more of a problem with Facebook than I do any other social media platform, because it's so restrictive and contrived as regards "friends", AND it's mining my data at the same time. I feel forced to be on there to maintain links with school friends as they put social events and message each other on it. Eh...

Basically, the only way you're going to have an ethical journal is to buy a recycled paper journal and handwrite your muse, like the old days... :o/

I got blocked from Instagram last year for - what I can see - liking too many photos. I thought that was the point of the app?

It's definitely good to fight against all levels of racist, sexist douchebaggery though, all those people who think they now have the right to be boors in public now, just because their upcoming president is one should not have an easy ride of it. We saw a definite upturn of outwardly racist behaviour in the UK, and it's a scary thing, but if you see it, you must defend the victim, however scary it is. I've yet to witness anything in public (though Oxfordshire and the home counties voted to Remain in the EU, despite being surrounded by a sea of Leave) I guess I am fortunate to live where I do.
