We had a very similar case a few months ago in Germany. A woman was on a campaign becoming mayor of Cologne, shaking hands and giving a speech, when a man stabbed her into the neck. She was badly hurt but survived and while she was in the hospital, got elected mayor indeed.

I really have no idea what is wrong with people. Disagreeing with someone's views is one thing (I think he hated her stance about fugitives) but murdering them for it?
