Okay, this is just too funny, the post just below this one on flist correspondence list -- hated the episode with about as much vigor as you loved it. I read your post then read theirs. Now I'm weirdly curious about a televised adaptation of Midsummer Night's Dream that resulted in two diametrically opposed reactions. But alas it does not air here.

About ten minutes in, Darcy said: "There is a top, some point above which this sits."

But that's a compliment. It IS over the top, but in every way. The BBC obviously threw money at it, so it looks utterly gorgeous, but (as sea_thoughts says below) the actors are what made it. Funny and poignant and mad.

I can perfectly understand why it might not have been certain people's cup of tea, and I feel very sorry for them.

The only other time I've watched it was when my middle daughter played Puck last year in a school production.

She was good, but let's say this production was superior in every way.

I think it all began to gel together when Lysander was Harry Potter Mark II, but daft. <3 And then it just got better.

Now I've watched it properly through I liked it a little better. I found the image of Hippolyta gagged and bound rather disturbing for a programme that was meant to be a family event but I guess the makers would say that it's okay because she was freed eventually and the man who did that to her died.

It was a simple way of showing how evil he as, and how he 'deserved' his fate... And RTD doesn't shy away from the dark & disturbing really.

I'd say A Midsummer Night was about 9000 times less disturbing than Doctor Who... (I have an American friend who thinks DW is completely unsuitable for children.)
