Doctor Who The Doctor and his relationship with Rose and Amy. (The Comparisons) & A Little Bit Of Angel.
In the old series he was running away from the Time lords and responsibilities in general. While in the new series he was running away from the pain of committing genocide.
Rose was his way of escapism. The Doctor would probably find any excuse to run. Although with Twelve it's not literally running more like trying to avoid or reluctant to deal with matters that made him uncomfortable. but I'm sure he still has that drive to do so. It's just apart of who he is. Unlike me. I avoid running when I can because I have bad stamina.
Eleven treated Amy in a older brotherly/paternal kind of way. He always saw her as the little girl he first met. Whereas Amy grew up idolizing him but eventually treated him like family (we didn't see much of hers).
I like the innocence of their relationship. Despite that scene (You know what I'm talking about). Technically Amy at one stage became his mother-in-law. But I prefer her ending compared to Roses. I know I'm a little harsh on Rose but just like you said Rusty wrote himself into a corner.
I seen some people said Ten was TOO human and probably thought it was Mr Tennant's portrayal. Which was ironic because Donna was the only one who never forgot he was alien.
Ten had suicidal tendencies after losing Rose and lost the plot after losing Donna. The message on the show says the Doctor shouldn't travel alone but that rule is made for ten the most because he was more emotionally "damaged" even more than Nine.:(
Eleven was constantly reminded of any mistakes he did as Ten and the reason he reverted back to being more "alien". Twelve sometimes has that air of authority that Ten use to wave about. Eleven looked "baby face", he would go all shout more to get his message across. He even states it on too occasion's.
"Do I just have a face that nobody listens to?!"(Eleventh Hour)
"There is no self-destruct! Hey? Hey? Hey? Had you going there, boys, didn't I? I just wiggled a few buttons, yeah. The old "wiggly button" trick. And the face, you've got to do the face. "Save her or we all die." I thought I rushed it a bit, but..."(Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS)
In general on any action/drama show where the lead character does something unethical to get the desired outcome, it's suppose to be okay because they are the "hero"/good guy.
The viewers are meant to except it because the story is from their point of view. If you try to see it from another perspective it wouldn't feel right. That's what creates conflict.
When I first saw that "Handlebars" fanvid of Ten, I was at least reassured I wasn't just seeing things that I disliked about him. Ten really needed a coping mechanism besides having a champion around. I was conflicted between wanting to hug him or slap him.
Angel The Series
Ah Spike! He was funny even when he was bad.:). He fell in lust/love with Buffy without having a soul. That's quite an accomplishment. When Angel had no soul, his love for Buffy turned into obsession. Stalking and trying to torment her. Whereas Spike was passionate or at least express his feeling's way more than the average vampire would. Do you remember the scene when Spike was dumped by Drusilla?. I don't know if I was suppose to think it was funny, but I did when Spike tried to fall on top of a stake to kill himself because of that chip in his head.:D. I thought there was no way the writers would get rid of him like that.
I liked the Angel/Cordelia relationship until Connor grew up. There was no major conflict when he was still a baby. Even Darla got to be more than just the former lover/vampire. I guess that was the point of the spin-off. To explore these characters further. I liked that Fred was introduced, because you know more "girl power" on the show. It was needed to balance the testosterone on the show.
No offense to Gun but I can't or at least I don't remember how him and Fred got into a relationship to begin with. I could understand Fred possibly being a calming influence on him but that's it. I did sympathize with his backstory but I think that was intentional. I probably have to re watch or look it up.
