elisi: Edwin holding a tiny snowman (First date by the_royal_anna)

A quick hello...

Weekends are *not* good for LJ! Too much family time, too little me time (of course I am incredibly lucky to have a wonderful family etc. But...)

Anyway, I came to ask if anyone knows of a Spike & The Coat icon? (As in, Spike walking along wearing The Coat, all swirly and stuff.) One that makes you go 'Spike/Coat OTP4eva!OMG!' (No text necessary btw), I don't have one, which I'm beginning to realise is v. bad. Because I want one. (Or maybe something like this, but without the vamp face...)

And a small fannish thought for the day. I cannot count the ways in which I love ‘First Date’, and I’m not about to start counting. All I’ll mention is the Buffy and Spike’s tandem explaining to Giles about the chip. Because it is such a wonderful evocation of their tandem lying to Joyce back in ‘Becoming’

Buffy is even wearing identical hats!

ETA: You could also just check out the brilliant icon that I'm using! (By [livejournal.com profile] the_royal_anna!)

LOL

Good catch. You're so right, I like the word "tandem" concerning them.

Points to icon. :)

I must have Spike/Coat icons somewhere. I shall go and have a look.

You're right, and that's very cool!

[identity profile] the-royal-anna.livejournal.com 2006-09-30 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
Of course! I'd almost forgotten about it until you posted this today - I don't think I've ever used it until now, so it will be lovely to send it to a good home. :)

I've been looking high and low, and strangely I don't think I have a Spike/Coat icon, either. It does seem a great oversight!

[identity profile] zanthinegirl.livejournal.com 2006-09-30 10:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, LOL!

[identity profile] jamalov29.livejournal.com 2006-09-30 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
Because it is such a wonderful evocation of their tandem lying to Joyce back in ‘Becoming’. I love the way you think!
Our beautiful tandem,indeed. :)

I had a look through my icons. There are a few with the coat but it's not swirling ! The one i'm using is from Crackers4jenn -snaggable.

There is another one 'The hero' from [livejournal.com profile] inxsomniax if you want it .

'Spike/Coat OTP4eva!OMG'

Hee! It is one of my OTPs, but don't they call it duster? Or is it just in fanfic?

Is is nice to see Buffy wearing the same hat, some fans complain that Buffy wears a differnt outfit every episode and she needs money...

On the other hand, one of the Ozander fans (Xander/Oz) noticed that the shirt Xander wore in Nightmares is the same shirt Oz wears in Anne or Dead Man's Party... I don't remember. It made many Ozander fans happy.

[identity profile] samsom.livejournal.com 2006-09-30 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I get a thrill, every single time, when they all go rescue Xander in the basement, and Buffy goes to Spike to see how he is. Without hesitation. The connection between them just zings through the air and everyone feels it.
Sigh.
Good times.

I'm having no luck with this at all here, and if I had more time I'd try and make a better version, but I really must go and do useful things! Anyway. It's yours if you want it. ;)

Or, variation on a theme...

Great observation. And, she wore the exact "Becoming" hat in "Checkpoint." Here, look:

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Spring Summers wrote about its significance in her excellent review of Checkpoint, also. Check it out!

Nothing very original..."get it done" seemed to sum it up quite nicely. :)

Ah like that catch, I hadn't noticed the bookending of those revelations.

[identity profile] lusciousxander.livejournal.com 2006-10-01 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Good for them! (I didn't know that Ozander fans existed until now...)

I think there were a lot of them when the show was still in the high school years. Plus there's that vid with Nicholas Brendon and Seth Green playfully *fooling around* in MTV's Vidoes That Don't Suck.

I'm not actually sure Spike ever calls it a duster - that might be fanon.

Call me sad if you like... but I did a text search of the shooting scripts. Neither Spike nor any of the other characters ever use the word 'duster' - but his coat is called that in the stage directions of two Season 7 episodes:

First Date

Her mouth still on Wood's fork, she looks up to see Spike. (By the way, he's not wearing his duster.)

Lies My Parents Told Me

EXT. CENTRAL PARK - 1977 - FLASHBACK

A BIRD'S EYE VIEW, amid the downpour, of a battle being waged between two combatants whom we'll soon learn are NIKKI, the Vampire Slayer (in her BLACK DUSTER), and 70's punk (not the same outfit as train in "Fool For Love) SPIKE (in VAMPFACE).

There's also this from Never Leave Me:

Black boots walk along the street. We move up the body, we see the black outfit, black leather duster, the cocky swagger...

We get to the face and reveal ANDREW. Dressed up like the Spike of old. Trying desperately to look cool.

It's a bit like 'The Scourge of Europe' which I think is also completely fanon... Now I wonder if *that* was ever used by the writers.

Nope. At least, not in any script. Apart from those demons in the Angel S1 episode, the only character ever described as a 'Scourge' is Connor...

Very good catch! I rewatched their scenes in Becoming the other day and wondered how did I not see their chemistry the first time and the way that they complete each other's sentences and have each other's backs even as mortal enemies? Oh yeah, the Angel angst was clouding my brain.

Buffy kept her hat for 5 years

Small quibble - the hat in Becoming is a utilitarian knit work/winter pull-on cap similar to this one, but a bit stiffer and heavier:

http://workingperson.com/workwear-1/headwear/winter-hats/port-and-companycaps-black-knit-cap-cp90-blk-74840.html

Whereas the hat she's wearing in FD is more of a cloche (I rewatched to make sure): it has a stiff, rounded crown, a rolled brim, and when she turns her head to the left you can see the outline of some sort of "flower" or "bow" ornament, similar to this:

Great catch I hadn't noticed that! I just rewatched their scenes in Becoming and wondered why the heck I hadn't noticed their chemistry - the way they already have each other's backs and complete each others sentences (as they do in FD - clever callback on the writer's part). Oh yes, the Angel angst much have been clouding my mind.

Small quibble: it's not the exact same hat. The one in Becoming is a utilitarian pull-on knitted (wool or acrylic) work/winter hat; the hat in FD is a more fashionable cloche, probably felt - the crown is stiff with a distinctly rounded shape, the brim is rolled and when Buffy turns her head in the scene you can just make out the outline of a bow/flower ornament and something of a band around the brim. (Yeah, fashion is one of my obsessions.)

I think it was the links, so I've learned to refrain from using them.

Oh and of course the point still stands! It's the visual mirroring; when I read "same hat" I couldn't resist being a putz - I mean, putting my interest in fashion history to good use. ;)
