In Bruges.

The reason I have been somewhat absent [last week], is cause we went on holiday. To Bruges, in case the subject line didn't make that clear. ;)

(And yes, I've seen the film, and I rather like it and hereby recommend it. VERY dark (and funny), but good.)

I feel I ought to do some sort of proper write-up, except I don't really have the energy. We had a lovely time. Bruges is, I believe, the best preserved medieval town in the world, and more than a bit fairy tale. All cobbled streets and gorgeous old houses and canals (with tourist boat rides!) and horse drawn carriages (with tourists in them) and about a million chocolate shops (interspersed with lace shops and beer shops) and churches & other random religious imagery. (V. Catholic country.)

We went up to the coast one day and had a nice day at the beach, and down to Ypres another day (or Ieper, as it's now called). Otherwise we spent most of our days in Bruges itself, which has loads to do. We went on the canal boats and walked up the big bell tower (366 steps, very steep, VERY NARROW), and went to several museums (The Cherub decided that she wanted the ticket that got you into the Lamp museum, the Chocolate museum and the Chips (fries) museum. She was very happy with her choices.)

We rented a lovely little house on the outskirts of the town (so neat! so clean), which happened to be next door to a Lidl, so food shopping was never an issue. *g*

Oh and I'm forgetting waffles! Waffles everywhere. In Lidl there was a whole aisle dedicated to waffles. I think we had waffles for breakfast every day except one. And sometimes bought them as a snack in town. (Do not go to Bruges if you're on a diet!!!) Oh and if anyone is thinking of going, you must go to Da Vinci's and get some icecream. It was incredible.

Mostly we had a wonderful time, the weather was pretty much perfect (between 20 & 25 degrees every day and sun) and I would heartily recommend it. :)

And what is in the chip museum? Besides chips.

In Bruges is a great film.

Who knew there was that much to it!

Not a chippie, then?

Gosh, now I want chips... I wonder if I could walk down to the chippy today... but then I need to walk to the bank, first.

Sounds lovely - it is still one of my 'to visit' places.

Glad you and your family had a good time. I'd only heard about Bruges because of the movie (never seen it) - it sounds really wonderful!

Bruges is one of my favourite places so I'm delighted you enjoyed it. J is a huge fan of it too but that may have something to do with the beer :)

They have Da Vinci's ice cream in Paris, I believe. It's delicious. Glad you had a good time!

So it turns out that I was thinking of Amorino which is similar and which has a few boutiques in Paris!

Bruges is lovely, I'm not surprised to hear you liked it. I spent a short holiday there a few years ago and I liked it a lot too.

Friends of mine also went to Bruges recently! I’m recalling their photos as I read your tale. :) It does sound like a lovely place to visit! (When you’re not being set up to be killed by your fellow hit-man. Love the movie, too. :D )
