LJ vs. DW

What with the LJ outage yesterday, a small LJ vs. DW debate started up in my DW.

Now, no one can deny that DW has better customer service, listens to its users, and doesn’t screw people over the way LJ does. DW is very nice, and I find it useful as a backup. But I can’t ever see myself moving there for good.

And what I realised, when trying to explain why I’d rather stay with ‘the bad boy’, is that the difference is like Community:

LJ is Greendale. It might be rundown, and the teaching staff might be peculiar and rude and disinterested in teaching, and the facilities might leave a lot to be desired, and random bouts of anarchy are par for the course. But it has character, and I have a long, and very personal, history here. It helped shape who I am, gave me friends and shared experiences I can’t imagine my life without.

So – City College (DW) might be nicer and shinier and better equipped. But I’ll stay with the blanket forts and the chicken fingers and the paint balling and the insane Spanish teacher and the fire alarms that are just painted on.

YMMV of course.

(See I feel bad about coming across as putting down DW, and am quite happy to bitch about LJ anytime and anywhere. Which - if I think about it - means that LJ is home, and family, and DW is... the place I feel I ought to like more than I do. And 'ought' is not a good motivation.)

I also use DW as a backup, as I would be quite sad to lose all my action figure pictures, convention reports and other things that took work, if LJ ever should go dead one day. You never know.

There is one huge difference though: If I am at vacation, I can read back all the LJ entries till the day where I started. On DW, they are not displayed after a certain time. I don't read there much often (as the few friends I have that post there post on LJ as well) but it always bothers me that I cannot read entries that are more than 14 days old.

Everyone complains about Facebook, yet everyone keeps staying there... including me. As we now also have a community - Torchwood group, John Barrowman group, Sixth Scale universe group. But there is so much wrong with FB filtering entries and you only see half of what your friends post, if you are lucky. I hate that. LJ still is my main journal, I write in here first and then post to all my other pages.

In the beginning, I copied my whole LJ over including comments, but with new posts, I just copy them by hand. I would have to wait first for everyone to comment, and I would forget to copy it then. Plus I always sometimes get comments even later from new people. So there is no way to copy them all. I just want my lists so I can give them to people who want to check it out.

Also, in Kazakhstan, my friend cannot access LJ, it is off limits. But she can access DW. I keep forgetting and give her LJ links.

On FB, you have one main page like the friends page here, and this is where you don't see everything. Your friend might post something but you never see it unless you go to their page directly. I am always worried that my friends think I am not posting anymore, and I wonder why I don't get any comments when I do. FB claims it is because people have 100 friends and cannot read it all. But I don't! I want to manage my own list and keep it simple.

At least they have a way now that you can comment to one person specifically. Before, you only commented to the whole thread, and everyone got it, if they were interested or not.

You mean, it would add the new comments to already existing posts? Last time I tried that, I ended up with every post double and then had to go and delete them all by hand. I am kinda afraid of trying again, to be honest.

I only started to copy posts after this first debacle. I never tried the crosspost feature though. You mean, you can crosspost from LJ to DW? I always assumed it was only the other way around, as I always saw those posts with "This was first posted on DW, comment there". And if posting to DW directly, you don't have all the help and buttons with HTML codes and links and cut like LJ has.

But basically, since I post so much, almost every day, I did not want whoever might be following me on DW, give a load of new posts at once when importing them once a month? They may not read all in one go? And as I said, after 14 days they vanish...

*shrugs* I guess the comments are not that important to me to keep. I have even started to post some longer picture stories to AO3 which apparently is for all fanworks, not just fanfiction. So some comments are scattered there as well.

If you imported your posts, they would import to their proper date on the timeline, not all dump at the top like they were new. So you wouldn't be flooding anybody's flist.

Thank you! Right, and now I remember why I did not like that option. Because nobody would see them in that case, if they are weeks old? It would really be only for archiving then.
