Oh, so it's not just me and maybe service to my country (South Africa). I end up on that outage.livejournal page, but Down For Everyone Or Just Me says it's just me. Rude of them.
And this is why I love Dreamwidth, and why I'm so glad so many of my friends are on Dreamwidth.
Dreamwidth treats you with respect. Dreamwidth picks you up for a date, opens the door for you, checks with you about food allergies before making restaurant reservations, likes the same dishes you do, but can cook awesome new dishes at home when you just want to be "the two of you," understands you need "me time," can write non-sappy poetry that makes you blush, and in general has all the bad guy charm with the good-guy reliability.
LJ?
Leaves cigarette butts on your front porch, forgets your birthday, won't let you use his phone, probably because he's afraid you'll find all his other girlfriends' phone numbers, complains that he doesn't like Indian take-away, even though you asked him first, and he said, "whatever you want," lets his hair go a little too long between washes, won't actually look you in the eye when he says why he was late to pick you up, then smokes another one of those damned Gaulois.
And leaves the butt on your front door step. Again.
Well, I'm pretty sure LJ didn't decide to be inaccessible just to be a pain.
Not that LJ doesn't have problems - I've been there since 2004, I've seen it all, strikethrough and everything - but it's just home. DW is... nice. But it's not home.
ETA: Dunno how familiar you are with Buffy, but [in my head] it's like the difference between Spike and Richard. To quote from one of my favourite fics, 'Buffy Summers Diary' (in the style of Bridget Jones). Richard is a nice guy she's being set up with by her friends. Spike is her old enemy that she's now having dirty!bad!wrong!hot!sex with in secret...
Immediately Xander and Anya revealed they had set me up with some Xander-friend. Gah! Had they never heard of self-sufficient woman of substance not needing men?
[...]
Was about to be Good Friend and inquire further about the status of [Tara's] heartbreak, when Vile Spike appeared at the back door, beer under his arm and wrinkly demon Clem in tow. He looked so...Spike, all panthery and lean and v. dangerous and sexy. He was behaving like a regular guy, however, which I found desperately unfair, making it almost impossible to toss him out into the night like he deserved.
I didn't even get to try, either, because Xander brought in Normal Richard at that point. I had to go figure out parking, Xander becoming an immediate incompetent for the sake of his ploy. Normal Richard pleasant and rather beige, like tapioca pudding or similar.
ETA: I should probably clarify, that the diary chronicles the events of an actual episode, so Buffy reactions are not made up. :)
As I said to thisbluespirit below, I hadn't considered the emotional ties to LJ, and I shall, in future, not make the kind of thoughtless comments I made here. I will only plead this; I've only been on LJ since 2006, and not regularly until 2008, so I don't have the history or emotional ties that many of you do. I didn't intend to become as fond of DW as I've become, but started posting from here back in (I think) 2012, and had so many fewer problems that I got rather enamored of the place.
Nevertheless, as I said, I'll remember and not be so irritating in future.
I think that may be the key; I don't think of it as "customer service," I think of those guys as fans, real fans, helping out other fans. Maybe that's why I'm enamored.
rather beige
I've always loved the use of the color beige to describe boring - I do it myself!
I think of those guys as fans, real fans, helping out other fans. Maybe that's why I'm enamored. I can see that. But... Still doesn't do much for me. Sorry.
Anyway - HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Hope you're having a GOOD DAY. <3 <3 <3
And I'll end it by saying that as long as there's someplace where I can interact with you, I'm happy. That's ultimately the most important thing and thank you so much for the good wishes!
Dreamwidth is that item you buy and never really like and you wish it would break and you could get rid of it, but it never does and you can't. Meanwhile, all the things you actually like keep breaking.
(Actually, Dreamwidth is worse than that, because it's accompanied by a bunch of people who also have the thing and go round saying "isn't this so much shinier than the thing you actually love? Isn't it wonderful that it NEVER BREAKS? Everybody should have this instead of the stuff you love; you love rubbish, evil stuff, excuse us while we're xenophobic about Russians again.")
Or, in short, please don't say that to LJ-ers when it's down. It really doesn't help us with our heartbreak, you know. ;-p
It's all right! You have the shiny thing; naturally you want to celebrate it. It's just that I'm with elisi - it is incurably beige!
(I think of LJ and DW as Horrible Henry and Perfect Peter. Or that brown carpet my parents had to keep for 20 years after they moved in because it was such good quality and never wore out.)
Also, there are several practical annoyances I have with Dreamwidth. I only started crossposting back in 2012 when it looked as if LJ really was going to force everyone onto that default layout, but they fixed it and now I'm stuck crossposting, and, actually, I hate it. I wish I could stop! But I have a couple DW-only people these days & I don't want to inconvenience people. But, yeah, if only I'd never panicked and started using the thing. :-(
and now I'm stuck crossposting, and, actually, I hate it. I sort of planned to cross-post, but it's just so... I don't even know. Possibly just the wrong colour, but something doesn't work for me. Also I can't find a DW layout I like, for love nor money.
Also I can't find a DW layout I like, for love nor money.
Oh, yes, me too!! I mean, finally, after three years, several increasingly depressed attempts and some tweaking, I have one I kind of like, but it is the ONLY ONE. I think whoever designs the DW layouts is like the anti-me or something. And also the anti-you, clearly.
Hate was a bit of an overly strong word, but I am a bit tired of crossposting now, but it seems silly to suddenly stop & possibly lose people, when it's just that I'm irritated about the way it does the tags & other minor details. (Although autofill for comm tags is such a nuisance, I can't imagine why DW decided on that as the way to do it.)
Normal Richard/Beige is such a good description! That thing you have no complaint about whatsoever but you really really wish you did, because you do.

Having just had a look, it does look very nice. Now and again I decide I want to try to find something I like and spend an hour getting continually more frustrated. (My LJ style - Component - is what I've had since... 2004 or early 2005. I love it. I change the banner/colours regularly, but the layout is perfect. And there's NOTHING like it on DW.)

Heh - my delightful son called me from the bus he was taking to work and sang Happy Birthday at the top of his lungs. I trust he did not generate ire amongst his fellow bus travellers.
And BB is always and forever my best birthday present!
It's a TV series from a good few years ago called... Dammit, I forget. Proton will be able to tell you. It was a bit like Once Upon a Time, I seem to remember.
The 10th Kingdom, a masterpiece of turn of the millennium network miniseries art.
Very clever, does cute things with fairy tales, fantastic evil queen for anybody whose viewing preferences revolve around morally ambiguous middle aged women (guilty). There's a character called Wolf who anybody who loves Eleven should have a soft spot for. And then there are the trolls. Oh, the trolls:

Except sigh a lot on Dreamwidth, I suppose.

Thanks.

Maybe it's the Russian Mafia... Or government!

Also, that icon is just so awesome, I can't even.
