The elections (both local and European) have made me rather unhappy. At work I've had people (nice people, that I like) tell me that they'd be voting UKIP without any sort of embarrassment. :(

As a comedian said recently - it wasn't immigrants who ruined the economy.

I hope you keep pointing out to those people that you are an immigrant - just to see them squirm...

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2014-05-26 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah - but then you point out that them liking you wouldn't matter - you'd still be banned... After all, if Nigel Farage was to pass a law allowing foreign spouses*, like his own, to live here then all those British Muslim men would be able to bring in 'foreign' wives too.

*Only men would have the right to bring in spouses, of course - women are too silly to make such decisions...

So he would have to be totally specific as to who he allowed... oh, let's say white women from only Northern Europe... hmm, would that be specific enough, or too specific... it would keep out the Greeks, but he'd have to admit bits of Poland are pretty far North. Beginning to look... what's the word? Ah - racist!

The rise of UKIP horrifies me, but I can't say its much of a surprise. I'm left wing and I was raised left wing, but the stuff that comes out of my mum's mouth these days after 25 years of reading the Daily Mail is shocking.

Maybe I didn't help by voting Green. :)

Yeah, this election...to say I was stunned and just a little dismayed is rather an understatement.

[identity profile] a-phoenixdragon.livejournal.com 2014-05-26 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Right?! And you all do it SO MUCH BETTER - course, we'll follow the example: when in doubt, go right. Faaaaarrrr right. Now - fall off the face of the planet. There ya go. *Headdesk*

Accurate icon is accurate.

And kudos to you all for that, lol!! Best way to find the extremists and Nazis is to foster them with oppression, then lob explosives at them. *NODS* *snerk*

We'd like to think we're unique like that. Tis completely abstract and non-linear, yeah? *HANDS*

A marvelous idea, honey...

*hugs you close*

Sorry for butting in, just wanted to let you girls know that you managed to make me laugh about this, which is quite the achievement, that I'm seconding everything (Doctor Who most of all) and that I love the two of you ♥

Wanna come to France? Our brand new leading party is the FN and your UKIP don't want to get together with them because they're not considered respectable.

My part of the country was where Jean-Marie Le Pen was running, and elected too, of course.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/france/5050338/Jean-Marie-Le-Pen-repeats-Holocaust-comments-in-European-Parliament.html

I think I'll go smash something now…

*laughs* I don't even want to get started on this again… I was livid enough yesterday… But yeah. I feel your pain. Extremes become something normal and this is not freaking okay. To think that a quarter of the French voters went for this… *shakes head*

Edit: oh, and now I read the petition and I want to slam my head against the nearest wall even more badly…

This is sort of the funny part? There's all these right wing parties that dislike 'foreigners'. Yet they'll have to work together to accomplish their goals...

Okay, now you actually made me laugh about it. A European parliament full of MEPs who hate each other because they're all foreigners... /o\

(As you can tell, I agree. I was really depressed Thursday morning by the sheer selection of right-wing hate-filled ("Gosh, us, racists, no? We just don't want any bloody foreigners here...") parties I could choose from.)

*bangs head against the wall*

It's that or crying, so I'm trying to look on the upside...

Well, yes. I came home on Thurs and watched a lot of fanvids. (Burying your head in the pretty sand: also an option.)

Yes, it made me smile too. ♥

Here's to hoping they're as incompetent as they're bigoted.
This.

(And I adore your icon!)

I blame the major parties for their blinkered refusal to accept that people do have a legitimate concern and ignoring those concerns.

It's really easy to accept immigrants when they integrate in a measured way but I can completely understand why people are voting UKIP in the area I work in, because in recent months you can walk the length of the (very busy and crowded) High Road and back and still not hear a word of english spoken. By anyone. It's kind of disconcerting, you know? Like somehow you have gone on holiday without realising it.

Thinking rationally, these incomers are not threatening. Most of them just want to work and be comfortable in their new life here. But who said people were rational? They feel threatened and overwhelmed and UKIP have pandered to their fears very successfully.

For the people already here on this very small island, it's becoming increasingly more crowded. There is a very real issue around resources and services provided with large influxes of people coming on top of natural population growth that must be addressed. We do need to plan how to utilise our resources and yes, I do believe that immigration should be controlled in some way, because our borders are the sea - we can't expand the land we have available to just allow free access to all. Many public services are already buckling under the sheer weight of numbers.

If the major parties don't take the UKIP warning seriously, we could really end up with the lunatics running the asylum.

I saw that. Hopefully it won't last? Here the Tea Party withered in the primaries the other day. I think it was John Oliver that pointed out that the Tea Party candidate did him a favor by making Mitch McConnell look sane!
