I loved Rose when she was on the show.
I liked her, but never found her very interesting. (I don't generally latch onto 'viewer avatars' - for me it was all about the Doctor. *g*)

I liked Martha, but the third season definitely felt like it had a Rose-shaped hole in it. I liked the fourth season much better, partly because Donna, like Rose, had a kind of "ecosystem" with her that made her feel more complete as a character. I always felt like RTD was maybe too busy getting Torchwood off the ground to pay as much attention to Martha as he should have. Also in hindsight, I think Russell was more interested in writing about the Master (don't blame him, LOL) than he ever was about Martha.
Yes, some truth in that, but I find Martha a lot more rewarding, characterwise. There's a lot to mine in her story, and her future, whereas Rose & Donna both got tied up with a neat bow. (Not that I don't like them, Donna esp. is awesome, but I don't have a lot to say about them.)

My pet theory about Martha is that she ran off with the Doctor less because she was in love with him and more because she needed to get away from her crazy family. Stuff like that.
*nods* But, like I try to explain above, her convoluted relationship with the Doctor is more rewarding (for me), than Rose's (starcrossed lovers) or Donna's (lost BFF).

I learned this the (very) hard way back on Buffy, when I had Oz and Willow's future all mapped out: grad school, marriage, kids, the works. Then Seth Green decided to leave the show and Willow became a lesbian. LOL. Oops! ; )
My OTPs just DIE. And are emotionally incapable of expressing their feelings. :(

One of the nice things about shipping River-Doctor is that there's so much wiggle room. You know how it begins, how it ends, but there's so much potential for unseen adventures between the episodes, you can easily write about a romantic side-trip they took to such-and-such planet. : )
Thissssss. (And Doctor/River is the odd one out, because they get together and get MARRIED and LOVE EACH OTHER, but are still deliciously screwed up.)

I can only imagine the hand-printed fabric that the sponge lady could create. She could also add a splash of color to my plain white cabinets. : )

I found Rose more relatable than interesting, in some ways. Weirdly, Martha is a lot more like me--middle child, academically ambitious, closer to her mother than to her father--than Rose will ever be. I think if I ever met someone like Rose, I probably wouldn't like her very much. But in terms of the characters, Rose generally felt more fleshed-out to me. I think a lot of that was that she had a particular environment and there were people in her life who felt more like characters in their own right. The other Joneses always felt like ciphers to me. I actually had a half-written parody fic in my head for a while called "Poker Night on the Valiant," where everyone was sitting around the long table waiting for Martha to show up and get the plot moving. ; ) The Joneses would say things like, "We have no existence without Martha."

LOL!! I'm glad I never got too attached to anyone on Torchwood. It seriously took me three or four years to get over Oz leaving Buffy (I held out hope until the bitter end that Seth Green might come back at least for a block of guest episodes, but no such luck). : / Ten-Rose was actually the first TV pair I'd shipped since the Buffy days, and I was glad that by the time I started watching the show, I already knew Rose was leaving. So she was gone before I hit the point of obsessive personal investment.

(And Doctor/River is the odd one out, because they get together and get MARRIED and LOVE EACH OTHER, but are still deliciously screwed up.)

Plus, they have their separate lives. River's not in every episode. So there's none of the over-familiarity of a character who's there all the time. If you 'ship them, you can have them as happy or as miserable or as messed up as you want them to be. There's a lot of room to play around. (Moff is really a clever bastard with River--he gets to have his cake and eat it, too). I can't wait to see if she pops up again during Twelve's tenure. It would certainly throw her comments about Ten looking "so young" into a whole new light. : )

I've not really got anything to add. Rose *was* more fleshed out - and relatable - partly because she was our guide to the Doctor. We (the audience and Rose) discovered him together, so she needed to be someone instantly familiar.

Ianto's death is the worst [fannish] thing to ever have happened. Before him I didn't know that you could mourn fictional characters.

Also companions are by their nature transient. The whole show works on continued change, so that helps.
