Behold the spamming!

Stuck with a sleeping baby on my shoulder, so I'll quickly jot down some (very belated) thoughts on 'The Dark Age':

Lovely episode of course, what wih Ethan showing up again! :)

But - the theme is very obviously one of age and growing up. The story centers around Giles, his past and present and what roles he plays. The stable father figure and the rebellious youth. We also get a lot of Giles/Jenny and their interactions put them very firmly in the 'adults' group. The way she invites him to 'come over Saturday' makes the Scoobies wig out big time.

We are shown Giles' slow breakdown and Buffy's worry - summed up in this exchange after Eyghon has taken over Jenny (who's jumped out the window saying '"...two to go."):

Giles: Oh, God, what have I done?
Buffy: Talk to me! Giles, you're scaring me.
Giles: I'm sorry.
Buffy: Don't be sorry, be Giles.

Then of course he tells her what exactly he was involved with he was young. And yet again the truth hurts and makes Buffy grow up that little bit more.

Giles: I was twenty-one, studying history at Oxford. And, of course, the occult by night. I hated it. The tedious grind of study, the... overwhelming pressure of my destiny. I dropped out, I went to London...
(exhales) I fell in with the worst crowd that would have me. We practiced magicks. Small stuff for pleasure or gain. And Ethan and I discovered something... bigger.
Buffy: Eyghon.
Giles: Yes. One of us would, um... (nervously pours a drink) go into a deep sleep, and the others would, uh, summon him. It was an extraordinary high! (smiles nervously) God, we were fools.

Although I think maybe he told the wrong person - because a lot of this sounds just like what Willow did in S6!

Now for a couple of frivolous bits. Buffy goes to the hospital, to make sure that vampires don't steal the delivery of blood. Angel turns up and they have this exchange:

Buffy: How did you know about this?
Angel: It's delivery day. Everybody knows about this. They only ruined one bag.

Then when she has to go off, she asks him:

Buffy: Do you think you could make sure the hospital gets the rest?
She realizes whom she's just asked to do that and raises her eyebrows at him. Angel just nods, not insulted by the query.

I found myself flashing back to 'Angel' and Darla opening the fridge... which contained bloodbags. Hmmmmm...

And at the very beginning of the episode, Willow and Buffy are playing 'Anywhere But Here':

Willow: Oh, that's good! Uh, I'm in Florence, Italy, I've rented a scooter that's parked outside, and I'm in a little restaurant eating ziti, and there are no more tables left, so they have to seat this guy with me, and it's John Cusack!

Apart from changing Florence to Rome, and John Cusack to The Immortal, me thinks Buffy stole that dream! (Also that's now how I picture her meeting him! And one day I'll probably turn it into fic.)

Ethan left a note to Giles at the end of "Halloween" foreshadowing his return...

It was funny when Willow mentioned the Bacchanalia that must have happened during Giles' wild youth! Xander didn't want to hear about Giles and orgies in the smae sentence. But as Giles pointed out, it was mostly about Ethan and him back then, which kind of make Githan canon!

I really loved Angel at the end of the episode when he saved the day and his demon beat Eyghon.
