Additional thought.

A conversation with [livejournal.com profile] sp23 made me realise something. This is what she said [re. not liking s8]:

But that's what fic is for. Even when the show was on, we, the fanfic writers, wrote our own version of what happened. I really don't feel that just because Joss is once again telling his story that I can't just arbitrarily ignore it all and write my own version of what happened post-Chosen or post-NFA.

To which my response was:

No no no! Well not in the sense I think you mean it. Of course it's great to explore all sorts of different avenues, but canon is canon. What happened on screen cannot be changed. I can read a million fics where Spike *did* go to Buffy in 'Harm's Way', but none of them will change the fact that he didn't. Canon is *fact* within the 'verse.

The joy of post-canon fic is that they all carry the same weight. No possible future is any more true than any other. I have no problem slotting in s8 as another one alongside all the rest, but I *do* have a problem saying that it is fact and none of the others carry any weight at all.

Pondering this, something suddenly dawned on me. See most fic written when the show was on, was written in response to what we saw - wanting to fix it or change it or just trying something else: First there was the show, and then came fanfic. This is not the case with s8! This time - fanfic came first! 3 years worth of it! There is no need to 'fix' s8, because what s8 is trying to do is 'fix' fanfic. ("Sorry boys and girls, you got it wrong. This is how the story goes!")

I know Joss has not been sat reading fanfic, but he still wants to 'tidy up inside our heads'. And I resent that.

On a related note, I really, really like s8 Buffy (the character). But the art is so offputting that I can't embrace her fully. It's like reading a great story with spelling mistakes. This makes me sad.

(Turning off comments because I *so* do not have time to answer them!)
