It’s not as shiny as it used to be (this ain’t Moffat), but (insert relieved sigh) it turns out that the dullness of S11 was a deliberate choice and Chibnall CAN write interesting stuff. It’s very RTD-like, but I like the RTD era (it was what first hooked me), so here I am.

If you haven't seen it yet, do your best to hide from spoilers. Unsure how you'd do that, but like... avoid the entirety of the internet. Don't worry if you haven't seen all of S11 yet - or any of it - it's more or less this quote from Austin Powers:

"~~The '70s and the '80~~ S11 - you're not missing anything! I looked into it: There's a gas shortage and a flock of seagulls. That's about it."

Just dive straight into S12.

Doctor Who S11.07 Kerblam!

Warning: This is a rant. If you liked Kerblam! just walk on by. This icon gives a good indication of my attitude. >:)

This was written many months ago, back when I was collating my thoughts (or lack thereof) on S11. Am posting it now because sea_thoughts asked very nicely indeed, but please be aware that my head is full of Good Omens (it’s like a couple of seasons of Moffat Who crammed into six episodes, and it GLOWS with warmth and happiness and everything is beautiful and there are layeers upon layers and metaphors and mirrors and the fic is as fluffy as clouds...). This episode is the opposite of that and made me very cross. (Hence posting it flocked and it may be a long time before I reply to comments. We’ll see, I just wanted to warn you.)

Thirteen Thoughts: 3. S11 Episode thoughts.

So, what is Chibnall Who like, judged by its first season? Well, it’s nice. Fine, really. Bit pedestrian, with a few flashes of greatness and one massive clusterfuck. (Or, as some people have said, safe.) The thing is, if it hadn’t been for Kerblam! really pissing me off I might not be writing anything at all, because I have precious little to say. If this hadn’t been Doctor Who I’d probably just have drifted away the way I do when something doesn’t really capture me. Doesn’t mean it’s bad — lots of people have come back to the show, so it’s obviously working for others — just that it’s not what I’m looking for in a TV show. (What that something is, isn’t easy to pin down, so I shan’t try. *g*) Anyway, this is all very weird for me, cause I'm a Pollyanna and just being mostly meh isn't like me. :(

This post is just me going through the episodes, mostly just so I can point towards it and say ‘These are my thoughts on S11’. I sort of group the episodes together in my head, so will do them in groups (or individually) as necessary. More or less keeping to the order they appeared in, skipping Kerblam! since that one gets a whole section of its own.

Thirteen Thoughts: 2. Why does she run?

This is probably the closest I'll be getting to actual meta on S11.

It's essentially me trying to understand Thirteen and how she fits with what came before. She is of course perfectly Doctor-y, but she feels a little bit like she fell out of E-Space. I don't really see the age, that core of darkness we know she carries inside. There are tiny glimpses, but it's nothing more than that, and continuity-wise the Time War might as well never have happened. (I presume this will get fixed in the future, and that they're just giving us a nice fluffy season of a breather to start off with.)

But to illustrate what I mean I shall use Four, whose era I am currently working my way through (just finished Season 13!). Four is of course utterly brilliant and effortlessly ageless and alien. But he feels young. (He's full of energy and action and curiosity and vitality, a happy man enjoying life.) I have been imagining this little exchange in my head, adapting River's first meeting with Ten:

RIVER: But look at you. You're young.
FOUR (wide grin, you know the one): See, this is exactly what I was saying to the Sisterhood of Karn the other day. Life doesn't begin until seven hundred and fifty!

In the same way Thirteen is perfectly 'ageless', easily striding across the universe and endlessly capable - a perfectly Doctor-y Doctor, with odd clothes and strange habits and full of obscure knowledge; but she doesn't seem to have that age to her that Nine onwards do, that burden of her blood-stained past, and sits much more comfortably alongside the Classic Doctors than the New ones. I presume this is a conscious decision, but I need that link, the acknowledgement of her history and her past to fix her properly in my head.

Or as Promethia said back when S11 was airing:

Back during Season Five I remember an old-timer saying that watch enough Who and inevitably your favorite character become the Doctor and your favorite Doctor becomes the Doctor. Which made enough intellectual sense to me to take note of, but man, I am feeling it this season. I get it now. Like, yes, your new friends seem lovely, but slightly in the middle of a 55-year old character arc here. Bit keen to get back.

The Doctor's internal conflicts have been the driving force of the show for... all of New Who, basically, so suddenly having a [perfectly nice, don't get me wrong] blank to work with is disorienting.

Now pointing out the issues obviously doesn't really help in trying to work out how to reconcile what's on screen with the disparity in my head. Thankfully, I found an explanation that works for me.

Thirteen Thoughts: 1. The Good

Since S11 was a barren wilderness from a meta/poetry perspective, I have been trying to work out how to organise my thoughts. Because I have thoughts, they're just scattered and mostly not terribly positive.
