So, May Bank Holiday. Went to York, had a lovely time. However...

The Cherub, I've discovered, has nits.

And Impish Girl has just thrown up all over the bathroom.

So yeah. LIFE!

(In more positive news, then I bought a v. pretty blue handbag w/red flowers - cheap Cath Kidston knockoff ftw! - and Miss M says she has a Black Books plot bunny. *focusses intently on the positive*)

Specifically, Impish Girl's. (She's 10, for those not keeping track.) Under cut, although there are no spoilers really... *g*

Teatime. Miss M is extolling the greatness of icanhascheezburger...

Miss M: And that's why I made a person ages ago, in case Spike-the-cat ever does something funny.
Me (gently admonishing): Not 'person'. 'Profile'.
Miss M: Mum! Why do you always have to correct me?
Me: Well... terminology is important.
Miss M (disappointed): Awww. *I* wanted to say 'terminology'.

Sometimes she's such a mini-me I almost feel worried. ;)

ETA: Oh, and The Cherub read all of Green Eggs and Ham all by herself!

The Cherub hasn't really got the hang of jokes yet. Especially not 'Knock, knock' ones, which she keeps making up... Here's an example from last night:

Cherub: Knock, knock!
Other family member (sighing): Who's there?
Cherub: The pizza man!
Other family member (giving in to the inevitable): The pizza man who?
Cherub: The pizza man who knows what's on your list!
[beat, as everyone looks around at each other trying to work out what on EARTH she's thinking]
Miss M: Well she is factually correct...

~~~
Also, the girls spent a good long time watching Young Dracula on CBBC yesterday (new TV series) and this morning (there was a marathon thing). And despite everything, I must give Joss credit where credit's due: Slayers are girls, these days. It's deeply embedded in our culture now, and for that I will always be grateful.
Today is Miss M's 13th birthday.
I know.
(Also, here is her first fannish effort, age 6. She was Little Miss M back then... ♥)
- First of all, would anyone be so kind as to make me an icon from this cap? (Or a better one of the same image - it's a bit fuzzy and I'd love a clear one. It's somewhat spoilery btw) No text or anything fancy, just that one thing. ETA: No worries, my flist is awesome!
- In children-centric news, then the Cherub had a nightmare about the Silence the other night. ♥ And the next evening she was worried that maybe they were on her ceiling. (And she just kept forgetting them...) HOW CUTE IS SHE? I pointed out to her that they're like 7 feet tall, and if they were on her ceiling she'd walk into them. That reassured her somewhat. *g*
- This will also go in my meta in more detail, but I am just so incredibly pleased with my show. RTD spent 4+ years breaking the Doctor (and, like you know, I'm all for holding people over volcanoes and see what they're made of), but Moffat has fixed him in 2! He systematically took him apart, addressed every single issue, and then carefully put him back together - and here he is now, the Doctor. Just the Doctor. It's a thing of such beauty that it literally brings tears into my eyes. (Shut up. But it does.) Oh and I love River forever and ever for the role she played in it.
- Speaking of the finale, then this might be the single cutest thing to come out of it. (Minor spoilers... If you're avoiding stuff, avoid this, I guess.) But honestly. SO CUTE!
- I'm sure there was more. Will edit the post if I remember.
Miss M: "This is a voice recorder!"
Me [looks up]: "It's a walkman."
Impish Girl: "What's a walkman?"
Me: *feels about a million years old*
ETA: After I wrote this entry, I [randomly] went to look up Right Said Fred on youtube...
*cue waves of nostalgia*
Still remember sitting up late on a weekend, listening to the official countdown on Longwave Radio 252 (already indoctrinating myself with English culture - and was there ever anything gayer than that band?), to find out if Deeply Dippy was still Number 1. I think it held the spot for... 4 weeks? And oh, 'I'm Too Sexy' was EVERYWHERE, and one of my friends bought their album (it was called 'Up'), and I only much, much later discovered that 'Right Said Fred' was originally a song recorded by Bernard Cribbins. And thus my life is all beautifully circular.
ETA2: OH GOD. Now youtube is giving me links to Ace of Base: All That She Wants. *cries*
A few weeks ago Spiderman 2 was on telly, and Darcy watched it with the girls. At the end, when MJ discovers Peter's secret identity, he launches into this talk about How They Can't See Each Other Anymore Because It Puts Her In Danger yadda yadda, which prompted Impish Girl to yell: "YOU ARE NOT THE BOSS OF ME!" at the screen.
That's my girl.
Miss M (12). The other day she talked about the 'dumb blonde' stereotype. She figures that because men 'like blondes', blondes probably wear more makeup etc in order to play on this, and use it to their own advantage.
~~~

Impish Girl (10). She complained about a song she'd heard, with the chorus 'Bring out the women and the cars and the cards'. Partly because it's illogical, and also because 'We're not slabs of meat!' [sic]

~~~
Both of them are very fond of NCIS, and their favourites are Ziva and Abby because they're AWESOME. (They also like Ducky.) We've also let them watch Black Books, which they find HILARIOUS, although the main 'lesson' from their POV is that 'Girls are the ones who tell the boys what to do', thanks to Bernard and Manny being daft and Fran telling them what for.
~~~

Last night the Cherub (5) wrote a story on the computer. I helped her with her spelling, and added a few fullstops, but other than that this is all her own work:

one day there was a little girl and she was called lily rose. it was winter
and it was cold and she went outside and she made a snow man
and then she went back in the house and she got a drink. when she
went upstairs she played with doctor who toys and she went downstairs.

then she got a drink then it was her tea time then it was her dessert
then it was her bed time. good night. the end

Tonight we - the girls and I - watched 'Genesis of the Daleks'. (With MANY MANY THANKS TO [livejournal.com profile] kathyh!)

Cue a ten year old creeped out by the CREEPY OLD DALKES, and very unwilling to go to bed... And this despite a lot of snide comments about all the stuff that's clearly made of cardboard.

Old Daleks = scary.
