I know it's only been two days since the last chapter, but this one's really short!

If you're looking for something to watch, you could do a lot worse than 'Strike'...

In case you were wondering, then yes, this is JK Rowling's detective. Thought we'd have a look, watched the first two episodes last night, and are now impatiently waiting for the third.

Also props for not a spoiler )

Read the whole thread. Very much worth your while. Money quote:

That's how implausible female strength is to these people: they literally think it's an element of fantasy worldbuilding, like dragons.

Great British Bake Off review – right where I want to be when the bombs start falling
Bake Off has survived the move from BBC oven to Channel 4 table, and it’s still showcasing the best of humanity. The world is on fire: this is what we all need

This, basically.

The cure for grumbling about Joss is to watch Zootropolis/Zootopia.

Female main character who is a person first, but without ignoring issues of race/gender. Cracking story, fabulous characters, exquisite animation that is fabulously imaginative and it's funny too!

Wholeheartedly recommended. ♥

Serendipity is a funny thing...

This whole Joss mess has come along exactly as I decided to finally delve back into the AtS 'verse and finish a WIP I abandoned years ago. (As it happens, it's the only fic I've ever properly planned out, so I found my extensive notes and actually know where the story is going!)

Now, before beginning to write I figured I should probably watch a few episodes, just to make sure I had their voices right in my head; so I watched A Hole in the World and Shells. And it's a fascinating exercise in doublethink (doubleview?).

Like, I love the 'verse. I love the characters. I love the story. I will always be grateful to Joss & co for creating this world.

But there is also the fact that (the very very special) Fred has SIX men standing around her bedside. All of them going to go out and try to SAVE her. (See subject line...)

As you know, the only other women (still standing) in the extended cast are Harmony (who is delightful, but mostly comic relief) and Eve, who is very powerful yet lost all agency the second she lost her boyfriend. ETA: Oh and there's Nina too. I like Nina. It's sad her role never extends beyond Being The Girlfriend.

The interesting thing is that the same week my girls decided to watch [the new movie version of] Les Mis.

And it was exactly the same thing:

- Men make things happen.

- Women have things happen to them.

This is why Buffy (and Wonder Woman, Rey, et al) are so special. They make things happen.

(Possibly more musings later, but this is a pretty well-trodden path, and I'm preaching to the choir...)

Also I'm realising this is probably a pretty awful way to try to get people to read my 'Spike & Angel & Illyria go on an epic quest to undo the power of W&H' story, as it's rather male-centric. AH WELL. It's not like LJ is teeming with people reading AtS fic anymore. Although I should probably point out that there's a good deal of Buffy & her Slayer army in it too...

For those who want to try (and the lovely handful which read the first few chapters back in 2013 when I started posting and might want to have another look), you can find the fic here (well, the first 7 chapters):

More chapters coming soon! :D (*crickets*)

Wasn't going to write anything, but came across this:

Submissions Open for “We Told You”, a Joss Whedon Zine

Bleating Heart Press is making a zine! 'We Told You' is a 50-page zine about the problematic work and activism of writer, director and producer, Joss Whedon.

When Whedon’s ex-wife Kai Cole wrote about the breakdown of their marriage, dozens of think pieces were published examining his most recent works and the too common trend of famous male feminists revealing themselves as manipulative and insincere. Long running fansite Whedonesque shuttered and hundreds of fans saw their affection for his work die. For many, Cole’s letter came as a shock. But not for all of us.

We Told You will look at the decades of intersectional feminist critique, and just plain disbelieving anger, that has existed alongside the narrative of Joss Whedon, perfect male feminist. Essays will include close examinations of particular works and recurring trends (waifish, emotionally vulnerable heroines; misogynistic nerds as author avatars; the racist underpinnings of Firefly), as well as his legacy as a producer and celebrity male feminist.

As an example of disturbing trends in his works, here's the always excellent My Medea, from 2009 (original post here):

Personally, then I'm disappointed, but not surprised. After all, this is the guy who took his own feminist icon and [in the comics] slipped her a magical roofie so she could become wanking material.

(Turning off comments as I don't care enough to discuss it. Follow the tags if you want more grousing. Or, even better, read yunitsa's thoughts on her vid. Or contribute something to the zine.)

Alternative title: Why Moffat Who is Poetry

Welcome to the meta café! Although this time it's more The Poetry Café (not that there's ever much difference). What I mean is, this post is like a follow-up to The Hollow Men and will be formatted in a similar way: I.e. first up is the poem/imagery, which will then be followed by lengthy, complex and in-depth notes. No really, this is enormous. (I will also write a more regular meta post later, with all the stuff that does not fit into this very specific reading.) Also, although this meta mostly centers on The Doctor Falls, it meanders through a lot of S10, and even further back. And as always, Promethia owns at least half of this.

But first, here is the second half of the fifth and final part of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land, as filtered through Moffat Who:

Hello everyone. Sorry for being semi-absent, we went to Wales for a week's holiday.

Which was very lovely indeed, and we spent a day on the river, and walked up a mountain (/big hill) saw Llanthony priory and Castell Coch, and (of course!) went to Cardiff where I saw Ianto's Shrine (♥) and went to the Doctor Who Experience.

Hence this icon. You go on an 'adventure' with the Doctor, and one of the rooms you go in, is the one with the TARDIS 'tree' and 'eggs'. I am still not over that. And Impish Girl got to pilot Eleven's TARDIS! Although the adventure was with Twelve, who was suitably delightful/rude.

(Am useless at writing about RL. But there will soon be meta! Which is another reason I've been so quiet...)
