People who introduced it to me have been presenting it as complicated, yet so far Moffat seems extremely careful to give clues, lots of them, that enable the audience to guess the outcome... Well you are obviously good at understanding all the metaphors/imagery, which makes it all straightforward. Some people find this difficult, and so it trips them up.
And the hints we have strongly point at her being a thing. Exactly. Which is why my current 'theory', in as much as I have one, is 'Gallifreyan Memory Egg' - which basically just a shorthand for the things which she seems connected to.
