I'm currently running away with my own theory that Modern!Clara is Clara #1, as it were, and that it's something that happens to her while/after she's travelling with the Doctor that allows her to die twice at least. She is very well rooted in the modern era: we see her as a child and her mum, and the Doctor talks to her dad. Although Moffat tends to go for in-born power, not changing later...
