Ash Wednesday.
At about the same time I found LJ, I came across this resource for Lent:
Praying Lent, an Online Ministry of Creighton University
(Catholic, but please don't let that put you off. <3)
I especially liked Beyond Giving Up Chocolate: Going Deeper in Lent.
ETA: DIY SOS is the perfect viewing... The level of generosity and kindness is just amazing. As is the commitment and love of the people they help, who have to carry burdens I can't imagine.
ETA2: Andrew Sullivan's Quote For Ash Wednesday.

I'm not remotely religious, but I still enjoyed the article about Lent being more than just giving up chocolate. I still remember kids in school making such a big deal out of giving stuff up for Lent, but then they'd still be horrid snobs or bullies with other students, and I'd be thinking, You really don't get it, do you?
I had a friend once who gave up fanfic for Lent. Her feeling was that fanfic was keeping her from reading more intellectually nourishing material. But she kept downloading fics so that on Easter Sunday, she could indulge herself in an orgy of trashy fanfic. I think it was the funniest thing I ever saw anyone try to give up. : )

I hoped that would be the case. I also like the bit in our Parish bulletin where they wrote that 'Fasting is not another word for dieting'. 'Twas very nicely put. :)

You've put your finger on the sore point. And sadly, there are far too many who don't get it...
