OH SWEET Then yes. Canon. Bam. The last place we saw Rose with it was... well, in the street---presumably she took it inside the TARDIS. AND LEFT IT THERE. xD Jack picked it up - because she dropped it when she ran to the Doctor's side after he'd been shot - and he carried it into the TARDIS and dropped it on the floor. So yes, that's where it stayed. :)
Oh yes, it's two entirely different situations/reasons, but I like the similarity in how you wrote him dealing with it, taking that emotional step back, so to speak. :) I was just pointing out the similarity. ;) Oh I got that - I'd just noticed it particularly, so I wanted to work out why it turned out the way it did. (So much of my writing is instinctual and then only later does everything join up.)
They were very different situations, too. I think that Mars was about himself; Demons Run was about his friends, him responding to people messing with the people he loves. And I think that is more dangerous, actually. :P Oh yes. (I have more thoughts, but I'll leave them for now.)
But thankfully he had River there to help temper the storm before it got a whole lot worse. If she hadn't shown up I have a feeling that whole thing would've ended very badly. :( Mmmmm. I love that scene too much for words - brutal honesty is an over-riding kink...
