But mostly, I love your breakdown of how S6 worked to remove the Lonely God complex. It’s a very, very large part of why I love Moffat’s Who. I don’t want cosmic angst; I want a mad man in a box. *nods* I have further thoughts on this, and the differences and how the show has been re-booted etc, but they'll have to wait. But I love what's been done. (I re-watched Marble House last night and it nearly broke my brain. Just... That Doctor was part of a different universe altogether.)
And this is where I actively disagree with you: there are four “Silences”: the Doctor’s Death, the aliens, the religious order, and the universe ending. The Silence Falling at the Plains of Trenzalor will be the third. Why? Because they’re enormously powerful organization that doesn’t seem to be terribly good. The humans in the fifty-second century aren’t killing the aliens (else Kovarian and co would never have been working with them), so something must have happened to the recording of the moon landing. The reason they’re afraid of Silence falling is that they don’t want to lose their power and influence. Sorry, can't agree at all. If I've learned one thing, it's that Moffat sets things up and then does exactly what he said he would (story-wise). S5 ended with Amy and Rory's wedding. River is the Doctor's wife. River killed him. River is Amy and Rory's daughter... The Silence (the religious order) believe that Silence will fall (= the universe will end), when the Question is Answered. This will happen on the Fields of Trenzelor, and it'll be the Doctor doing so. They go to EXTRAORDINARY lengths to avert this, creating a fixed point. Plus, from The Pandorica Opens:
CYBERMAN: All projections correlate. All evidence concurs. The Doctor will destroy the universe. [...] DALEK: The cracks in time are the work of the Doctor. It is confirmed.
It'll be the Doctor who causes Silence to Fall (=end of the universe). They said so. (I presume that there's someone behind it, mind you, but it'll be the Doctor who does it. Which will be a neat trick/cheat since he knows he's already re-booted it.) You cannot convince me otherwise! Oh and of course the religious order want to keep the universe intact.
But I do think that the Plains is when River will learn his name, and quite possibly married in the actual timeline. (It’s legal, period, because they both remember. And who else is going to care about a Time Lord marriage ceremony? The Time Lords are all dead.) Heh. Indeed. There might or might not be another wedding. It's not really important. But yeah, that's where she'll learn his name.
I love the fact that the Doctor traveled on his own for 200 years without going insane. It took Ten, what, months? (He had other issues, but the contrast…) IKR?
River’s speech on top of the pyramid is probably my favorite quote in Who, followed closely by the one in AGMGTW. I love that she can talk in such a way as to make the Doctor listen. Word. Her 'Shut up!' is made of SO MUCH WIN! Because he does. :)
I have so many more thoughts about this episode, and Who in general, and they’re in no order to even be put on paper (or screen, as the case may be). But you helped clarify some of them, so thank you! Totally my pleasure! And thanks for your awesome comment.
