Genesis of the Daleks; the very first appearance, in the William Hartnell era; plus a Jon Pertwee era time-travelling story - that's it as far as the Daleks being interesting.
Scary? Well, I was 12 when I first saw a Dalek story, and all I can remember doing is wondering what all the fuss was all about.
Of the great alien villains; the truly intriguing ones were the Ice Warriors; they were really grey, from out and out stock evil aliens in their first Troughton story to never-be-too-sure-you-can-trust-them allies in their latter stories.
The Sontarans have always been a bit ridiculous; the Cyberman a bit pathetic (even more so in their NuWho form), all three far too easily defeated. The Ice Warriors? Never could be sure whether they were on your side, or not.
Oddly that seems to be where RTD & Moffat are taking the Doctor himself, which makes it all the more puzzling to me that they've never considered bringing the Ice Warriors back.
