To be fair, the ratings issue is more complicated. The overnight ratings for S5 dropped quite a bit compared to the RTD era. The average overnights for S1-S5 were 7.3, 7.15, 7.04, 7.2 and 5.98 million viewers. The final ratings, taking in timeshift, were 7.95, 7.71, 7.55, 8.05 and 7.7 million. The season trends are worrying, because viewership steadily dropped in S5 over the season, compared to a dip and then recovery in the previous seasons. Moffat et al of course are aware of that and insist that the iPlayer and American ratings more than counteract that. But the split season does seem to be an attempt to capitalize on TV ratings. I'll be tracking them, anyway. *g*
