Because what his actions in WoM do show is the (moral) necessity of his death. Too much power, too long a life, and now things are starting to spin dangerously out of control. Not punishment, but necessity.
Oh absolutely. This is definitely how I see it - he was always in danger of spinning out of control, and when he finally broke he needed a wake-up call to see what he'd become. It's just all the surrounding stuff that gets in the way...

WoM is the deconstruction of the Doctor as God theme.
I very much agree, and I've heard of The Second Coming, so I know that these are the themes he likes to explore. And I love WoM, and think it's brilliant. My problem is more theoretical - did he have any right to use the Doctor in order to work on his own issues? Torchwood is fair enough, that's his own show, but although I love Ten to pieces the Doctor is an uncomfortable fit into the god mould. And yes, he deconstructs it, but he still has to set it up first. It's what the whole thing pivots around. It's a bit like Joss' thing for 'strong women' who are victimised first - yes I'm all aboard the women fighting back, but why does he have bring them low first? (Which he does to all of them, except Buffy. *loves Buffy best*) I can feel Rusty's hand very heavily in the whole thing, and it distracts me.

Um, this is rambling. Sorry. (And re. The Second Coming then it doesn't sound offensive so much as the sort of thing that would cause me to bang my head against the wall repeatedly. I had the same reaction to an interview I once read with Philip Pullman - I have no problems with people railing against Christianity, but at least rant against the actual faith and not the imaginary thing that only exists in your head... Have never been able to read any of his books because of it.)
