(What I did was, I searched from the front page for "Auslan" and "Melbourne" and "Airbender" and "Farscape" and other things I might find interesting, and looked at all the recent posts, and friended people who sounded worth reading. Also - which you can only do if you have a paid account - I went to my Network page, which is friends of friends, and looked at all the different posts that were there. I do both of those whenever I feel bored, and I'm starting to build up a nice flist...)
Job-hunting is horrible!! Especially for introverts. It's not enough to be qualified for the job, there's the whole horrible self-promotion thing. It is horrible and so stressful.
