Enjoyed it hugely btw. Don't have time to flail about it, but just wanted to say that I'm very much looking forward to part 2, and wondering whether anyone would be kind enough to tape part 3, since we'll be going away.
Although it made me pine for the days when House was still good. I was watching completely torn between the feeling that Sherlock is amazing in its own right and I should just be thrilled about that; the sudden, happy realization that it was working to fill a House shaped hole in my life; and the crushing reminder of how much I used to love House and how bitter I am about how much it has been ruined.
And I used to watch House too, now many years ago. Gradually stopped the year after he fired the original team (series 3? 4?). Anyway, it used to be this whole thing, where Darcy's older brother (then a bachelor) would come round every Thursday for tea and we'd watch it after the kids had been put to bed. Not in a 'We get together to watch House' kinda way, more in a 'He always comes round on a Thursday, and House is rather entertaining, so we watch that'. *is nostalgic* These days of course, my dear b-i-l is happily married and has an adorable little daughter, so not so much with the visiting...
And hey, that was a ramble and a half. But yes, fond memories of House, and am happy I bowed out before it became bad.
Oh (sorry, living basically under a rock tv wise I can't imagine a life without downloading), it is available on the BBC homepage too, so maybe you can watch legally online.
I really liked it. I was surprised at how well updating worked; I wasn't expecting to like it. But I was a huge fan of the stories as a kid, and I loved Jeremy Brett's version in the 80s.

I've never read the books, so only know whatever I've picked up by cultural osmosis and various TV shows I've half-caught over the years, so came in pretty openminded. And lucky me, 'twas excellent! (Also am learning lots and lots about the books from people's reviews, because they all compare the new show to the originals.)

I didn't know whether to say but the article also said he could end up playing the Doctor because Matt Smith has said he will finish after two series. He talked about juggling both roles.
K your short post got me interested since I had previously seen something about this show elsewhere. So watching it now. Except already Sherlock and Eleven are talking to each other in my head. The line where Sherlock echoes something similar to 9--"funny little brains, how do you get around?" that sort of clinched it. Evil bunnies.
