the reason it works is because it's Amy and Rory letting the Doctor 'join in'. I can see that (but still don't want to read it!). Amy and Rory, I don't think, will ever have a completely conventional relationship.
*nods* It's like adult = grim, which isn't true at all. Far from. Probably why I've never liked reading literary or mainstream fiction. Scifi/fantasy usually isn't unrelenting. (Though speaking of grim: I'm trying to decide whether or not to watch CoE, because I know what happens. [Hard not to when the Internet exploded after it aired, and I hadn't even seen DW at that point.] Thing is, while I like the characters of Torchwood, it's been routinely too bleak for me to enjoy. So…)
The DoctorDonna, and the Doctor & Amy (and Rory) just work. Maybe it's because of the *friendship* at the heart of things, rather than a love story. I think you just hit the nail on the head. It's friendship, and trust, and a whole bunch of other stuff mixed in.
Or maybe that you're feisty and are impatient with people not explaining themselves properly. *laughs* That's me to a T! I adore that Amy tries to counter fear with knowledge instead of panicking, which is exactly what I do.
