Remembrance Day
Quite a few people have posted thoughts on the war(s), and I just felt like adding my perspective. It's short, since I'm pressed for time, but might be interesting for some?
The Faroe Islands (tiny islands in the north Atlantic - belonging to Denmark, but with their own culture and language etc) were not actively involved in the War as such. They were occupied by the British, and very gratefully so! What the faroese do best is to fish, and they spent the war fishing and then transporting the fish to Britain. This was dangerous, and many fishing boats were sunk by the germans. Proportionally the faroese lost as many men in the war as any country fighting.
I said that the British were welcomed - and to prove this, I can remember when the Faroes celebrated the 50th anniversary of the occupation (some years ago now). Possibly the only country in the world to celebrate an occupation (please correct me if I'm wrong!).
I really must run, but I just thought people might like to learn about a little-known part of the world and what happened there!:)
