I guess that's the sort of thing I was hoping we'd get more of in S5, an acknowledgment of just how remarkable that was. Ah yes. But then I did like how Spike was proud of himself for what he had become. I'm not sure he ever needed the pat on the back that we all would have loved to have seen!
You end up fitting a part of yourself into the show. In fact, you have to, in order to make it all work. Now that's a very good observation! And why I think the later seasons are so fought over - because it all becomes so much more personal.
About the whole 'Spike is the hero' thing, then I came across this very interesting bit about the fight in 'Destiny' from an report from a con of some sort with David Fury:
Fury and DeKnight had a fight over Destiny. Seems DeKnight wrote it that Angel won the fight. Fury told him that Spike had to win the fight. DeKnight protested that he'd already written it, and Angel won. Fury told him to rewrite it -- that Spike had to win. The episode was all about how Angel had made Spike what he was and how Spike had been put upon all those years, and Spike had to win. At which point, a very cross DeKnight (and this part comes from a later conversation with DeKnight, not from Fury), apparently yelled at Fury *Write it yourself!*
