I don't see the point in choosing the one that makes least sense of the story purely in order to fan the flames of one's own bitterness. Nonetheless, I accept that it's a legitimate way of understanding what we saw on screen. That's very well put. For me the reveal at the end of 'Grave' was always a big 'of course!' I agree that it might be confusing for others, but those particular fans I was thinking of are very much of the 'Spike was an evil, evil thing who led poor Buffy astray in S6 and anything else is people being stupid.' school. Which just makes no sense to me.
I don't think I've read naything quite this thorough on the subject of the soul Really? I feel all proud now! *g* I think the BtVS/AtS differences are probably inherent in the shows, because of who the main characters are. (And Joss' world building is rather wonky, but that can't be helped, sadly.)
