I don’t want to miss a thing... (Blades of Glory 'review')
If you like any (or all) of these:
a) Figure skating
b) Will Ferrell and/or Jon Heder (=Napoleon Dynamite!)
c) Male bonding (y’know - can’t stand each other, but in the end become firm friends etc. Think ‘Hot Fuzz’ - but with way, *way* more (sub)text! Did I mention the figure skating part? *g*)
d) Comedies
- then 'Blades of Glory' is the film for you. :) More details under the cut, no particular spoilers! Just thought I’d spare your flists.
a) Now I adore figure skating, but it is undoubtedly an incredibly gay sport - I mean the costumes they wear! Now put two blokes together... the thing goes nuclear (*points to icon*). I have no words. Mostly because every time I think about it I crease up laughing.
b) Now I hesitate to write this, but... Will Ferrell is kinda... hot... in this film. I keep trying to think of a good way to put it, but there’s no escaping it. There is some attraction. His character *rocks*. And Jon Heder is just adorable! It took me like 5 minutes to realise that it was the same guy who played Napoleon Dynamite, because he is so very different. And he has the cutest smile ever... Actually - here are two icons I’d totally upload if I had space (made by

c) OK, so I admit I have a huge, giant kink when it comes to male bonding (just see Spike & Angel in AtS S5. Actually imagine Spike and Angel having to figure skate, and you’ll have a not completely inaccurate image of what this film is like! *g*) (The characters are wildly different from our vampires, but one is blonde and the other dark...). Anyway, Darcy loved it too (so it is not just my slash-happy brain that went into overdrive), and the actors just *revel* in their roles. It is a pure joy to behold.
d) Now, this film has clichés all over the place. They’re everywhere you turn. But, they prove that clichés are clichés for a reason - when done well they’re unbelievably satisfying. And my, they’re well done - this film is fabulously written and incredibly quotable. And, more than that, it is very, very, very funny. I mean ‘almost crying with laughter’ funny. Not all the time, of course, but there is a steady stream of delightful scenes and hilarious lines, and then now and again it just goes stratospheric.
Aaaaand, that is all I have time for. Also people are probably feeling sick after all that gushing. But just give it a try, pretty please?
Oh and the skating itself is *gorgeous*! :)
(Darcy chose it on a whim on his birthday, when scrolling through 'Movies on demand'. I was a bit dubious, but then 5 minutes in there came scene that just *killed* me. I might still be dead, who knows? But it is on my Christmas wish-list now! *g*)
ETA: Here's the film poster. See what I mean?
