Writing Faith into a corner...
OK, some thoughts on 8.6 behind cut. Some serious, some shallow. Written v. quickly, just to get my opinion down - I seriously do NOT have time to discuss this, hence the disabling of comments.
Right, first off a few quotes:
From 'Sanctuary':
Angel: "Where are you gonna go? Back out in that darkness? (Faith hesitates then keeps walking) I once told you that you didn't have to go out in that darkness. (Faith slowly comes to a stop her back to Angel) Remember? That it was your choice. Well, you chose. - You thought that you could just touch it. (Walks slowly closer) That you'd be okay. - 5x5, right, Faith? - But it swallowed you whole. - So tell me -(comes to stand behind her) - how did you like it?"
Faith turns and slugs him - hard. He doesn't retaliate, just slowly turns back to look at her.
Faith stares for a moment then looks anywhere but at him.
Faith hesitantly: "Help me?"
Angel: "Yeah."
Faith: "So, how does this - work?"
Angel: "There is no real simple answer to that. - I won't lie to you and tell you that it'll be easy - because it won't be. - Just because you've decided to change doesn't mean that the world is ready for you to. - The truth is - no matter how much you suffer, no matter how many good deeds you do to try to make up for the past - you may never balance out the cosmic scale. - The only thing I can promise you is that you'll probably be haunted - and may be for the rest of your life."
Faith: "And what if I *can't* say it? There are some things you can't just take back, no matter how sorry you *are*, right?"
Angel: "Yeah, there are. I've got some experience in that area."
Faith: "Right. And you've been doing this for a hundred years! I'm not gonna make it through the next ten minutes."
Angel: "So make it through the next five, the next minute."
Faith: "I don't think I can."
Angel: "Yes, you can."
Faith walks away: "God, it hurts. I hate that it hurts like this."
Angel follows her: "Oh well, it's supposed to hurt. All that pain, all that suffering you caused is coming back on you. Feel it! Deal with it! Then maybe you've got a shot at being free."
From 'Salvage':
FAITH: (looks out the window) I'm not gonna kill him, Wesley. Angelus. (shakes her head) I don't care what you thought you sprung me for. Angel's the only one in my life who's never given up on me. There's no way I'm giving up on—
WESLEY: I know. That's why it had to be you.
Thing is - I can't get the Faith in those quotes to really jibe with the one who says "Heard you the first time." Yes I can obviously see the 'she does it so someone else won't have to' (neatly tying in with Giles killing Ben etc and setting up their bonding), but I just can't see her agreeing that swiftly - this is where the medium really lets the story down. (Jeanty's Faith looks more like the character, it's true. but the art still irritates me *immensely*!) We have no inner view of Faith making that decision, no actor to subtly portray a silent struggle... What I'm hoping for is that she has decided to *help* the rogue Slayer, even if Giles has given up on her pre-maturely. That would make sense for the character I know. ETA: I don't want Faith to give up on her redemption - to think that all she's good for is dirty work. ("Oh well, it's supposed to hurt. All that pain, all that suffering you caused is coming back on you. Feel it! Deal with it! Then maybe you've got a shot at being free.")
Now - tying in with this what a lot of people have commented on... that really it isn't all *that* far-fetched for Faith to agree to the proposition, given what her life is like. This is where my subject line comes in - Faith has been written into a situation where this would be plausible. And the thing is... I'm not sure I like it.
stormwreath suggested that she followed Robin to Cleveland, and then was too proud to ask to be moved when they broke up. I can see that, but - it is only speculation. Also wasn't one of the points of her S7 arch that she was actually bonding and trying to move away from that 'isolationist Slayer-crap'? All we know is that she's in Cleverland, is deeply unhappy, Giles hasn't spoken to her since 'Chosen' and apparently no one else is bothered about her... which, IMHO, reflects v. badly on the rest of the Scoobies. It's that Scottish castle all over again - I don't have a problem with the concept per se, but with the fact that we are not told *why* they're in that specific place. There's a year missing, and no one has filled in a single detail.
OK, that's my main gripe. Thought the rest is enjoyable enough (far more so than anything else uptil now, and sorry about focussing on only the negative aspects. But character development is my *thing*, and really matters) - loved The Doctor and Rose - and the Faith/Giles bonding was very nicely done. The whole 'My Fair Lady' bit is utterly *ridiculous* though. Fun, but totally out of touch with reality. Sure, knowing what a salad fork looks like is probably important, but there are other factors that matter more...
- Having partied with the princes. (Seriously - had Giles wangled that one, she'd have been through the door like *that*!)
- Knowing any designer item in an instant, and having a wardrobe full of chic, one-off items. And next season's boots.
- Skiing at Klosters.
- Being straighforward. The Upper and Lower classes call a spade a spade. Only the Middle classes are painfully polite. I hope that's how it'll be written...
Darn, must run.
ETA2: Didn't mean to be *quite* so negative - liked this issue far better than the rest. It just suffered from 'missing year syndrome', just like the others. And it's a shame.
