That's a lovely metaphor! And the point about being scared about the Scoobies 'seeing the connection' - it made me think about 'Moulin Rouge' and the moment when the Duke saw that Satine loved Christian.
And the love/sacrifice... very deep, the only bit I'll comment now on being Buffy's little smile. This was actually part of the essay originally, but I trimmed it down: I think she smiles because she knows it is a gift. She's been there herself and probably thinks that he's found peace, like she did.
