Personally 'Dead Things' is one of my all time favourite episodes, and I loved the s6 (and s7) story, but it's also so very painful, that I completely understand your reaction
It really is wonderful episode once you get past all the pain and misery of it. It isn't pretty, but I think it's well written (which is saying something given my opinion of DeKnight) and very well acted, and deals with a lot of Buffy's issues.
I do think it would have worked better for a lot of fans if they'd have made the whole thing more surrealistic--like have the entire episode be a dream. Then they really could have explored the role-reversal (do you trust me?) theme that's spread throughout. It also would have more congruous with the eps. before and after.
