Eurovision 2023 (United By Music)

Eurovision is a difficult thing to explain. Yes, it's a music competition, but it's more than that. Here is the song that summed up this year, far more than any of the songs in the competition (and I dare anyone to not feel emotional at this utterly beautiful song/performance/message):

('You'll Never Walk Alone' was the final part of a segment called The Liverpool Songbook, which was very good. But the final part was just incredible.)

~

Then there were last year's winners, Kalush Orchestra with 'Voices of a New Generation' with all kinds of cameos! And the underground station that most of the video is filmed in, is apparently where they held the Ukrainian competition.

~

Sam Ryder also performed - I keep meaning to post about him, because we went to see him in concert a few months ago and he was delightful! And at the concert he played his new single (which hadn't been released yet) and when he came on last night we were all saying: 'It's going to be 'Mountain' isn't it?' And it was! ^_^ Enjoy!

I am a mountain
And down in the valley below
Is all that I've overcome
All that I've overcome, woah

The man is a ray of sunlight/labrador in human form. <3 Most of the comments on the video are bemoaning the fact that this wasn't this year's UK Entry. And they have a point. :)

The other thing I wanted to post was the flag parade. If your idea of a flag parade is the Olympics (endless and dull), please watch this:

Most wonderful of all is that the parade was interspersed with performances from past Ukraine contestants - including Verka Serduchka! I was so happy! :D :D :D (Dancing Lasha Tumbai is quite possibly the greatest Eurovision performance of all time.)

In short, it is one of the greatest shows on earth, and that's before we even get to the actual competition songs. :)

Re. the actual songs, then I didn't particularly care for the winner (I like Loreen perfectly well, she was a guest performer at Dimash's first solo concert in 2017) but this one just didn't really do it for me. I thought Finland was hilarious and would have been happy if that had won (WELL DONE UK for giving them 12 points!), also thought Australia was great, and I liked Cyprus and Switzerland - I like singers who can *sing*. Moldova was in the best of all Eurovision traditions, as were Croatia.

OK, enough waffle, I need to press Post.

ETA: OMG, I forgot! The best comment of the night was Graham Norton (obviously) - I can't even remember what it was regarding, it was the follow-up: "But what do I know? I'm just an ageing homosexual in a commentary booth."

And that's the other side: This is quite possibly the most inclusive show anywhere. You can't move for rainbows. 🏳️‍🌈
