OK, I am back at my computer (posting from my phone is so awkward!), so have a picture, rivalling Six in colourfulness:
A few thoughts...
First of all, Twitter is very happy, which is lovely to see. Many many people going 'FIRST BLACK DOCTOR', which is not technically correct (hi there Jo Martin Doctor), but alas she is not well known.
And it's a funny thing, because as a 'box ticking exercise' goes, it could be seen as being right up there:
- Young and 'hip' and a star in a hugely popular Netflix series, with a ton of young fans, which will bring in new viewers
- A Scottish (!) Black actor, born in Rwanda, so we get a POC at the helm.
- It's unclear if he's LGBT+, as he has never spoken about his sexuality (and he definitely has a right to keep it quiet), but Eric (the character he portrayed in Sex Education) was SO GAY he's basically automatic representation... Like, just look at my icon, it's Eric in cosplay as he & Otis are off to watch Hedwig & the Angry Inch. <3
- Re announcing it the way they did, a thread here.
Despite all this (which is GREAT, don't get me wrong), I'm mostly hugely excited because he's such a fantastic actor. Here's RTD:
"Sometimes talent walks through the door and it’s so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars. Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds."
And I can absolutely believe that, he is absolutely outstanding. And with a TON of personality, I can't wait to see what he does with the part. ♥
(I have watched most of Sex Education, we're currently somewhere in S3... It's a very good show, but all the teen dramatics mean it's best in small doses. *g*
