Honestly, expecting people to do anything else, unless it benefits them (i.e., need evidence of negative results to return to work/school etc.) is a lost cause. Just the other day I saw someone call other people animals for not returning their shopping carts to corrals, thus forcing employees to go around an entire parking lot rounding them up in 100+ heat. I always return mine so had no need to take it personally, but it made me realize how very rarely people think of how their actions impact anyone else and how rarely they do things that are practically no effort just to make someone else's day easier (or things better for the environment, etc.)
