Lockdown Update Day 347
Two Whedon articles:
Variety: Inside Joss Whedon’s ‘Cutting’ and ‘Toxic’ World of ‘Buffy’ and ‘Angel’ (EXCLUSIVE)
ETA: I wanted to pull out this quote especially:
While several high-placed sources who worked on “Buffy” say they were not aware of this rule, a person with direct knowledge of the production at the time confirms to Variety that an effort was made by those around Trachtenberg to ensure the young actor was never alone with Whedon. According to this person, it was due to an improper verbal exchange between Whedon and Trachtenberg.
^I hope this is accurate. It sounds in line with the rest. (That is - he is a bully, but not a predator in that sense.)
Jezebel: The Rise and Fall of Joss Whedon, and the Myth of the Hollywood Feminist Hero
~
The Atlantic: Donald Trump Is Out. Are We Ready to Talk About How He Got In?
“The First White President,” revisited
(by Ta-Nehisi Coates)

Plus another thing from America:
Amid COVID-19 pandemic, flu has disappeared in the US

And finally, this whole thread is delightful:

I can't remember where I came across it, but I am glad I found it.
I def like the point about the feminist hero being a man - I remember when this "feminist icon" porn star was accused of assault and abuse, this great article asking why the 'feminist porn star' idol was a man at all.
This. Of course it's great if men are allies, but there is a sense of ~some~ loving the limelight.

THe cat breed thing made me smile - there seems to have been an urge to make basic cats into identifiable 'breeds' for a while now. Obviously this applied to Manx cats amuses me - here they are just 'cats' and we use 'rumpy', 'stumpy', and 'half tail' as simply a descriptor like 'ginger', black' or 'tabby'. But I know that in the USA they are trying to come up with breed standards for what we see as moggies.
But funnier still was an elderly lady I met whose cat was a tabby with some Siamese ancestry. She told me an American visitor was determined to describe it as a 'tabby point Siamese'. When I told S2C he looked at our then cat, Shaka, who was black with touches of white but also clearly had Siamese ancestry, and decided in that case Shaka was a 'pointless Siamese'. The number or people who nodded sagely when told this, before the penny dropped, was surprisingly high!

The relief is still intense.
I cannot read it without hearing 'I'm coming out' in my head, and wondering what coming out of the closet will do for his standing amongst the fascist 'christian' groups who support him...
I fear they'll just get more entrenched...

That seems logical. :)

They should get dogs instead. Cat owners do not care. ;)
in that case Shaka was a 'pointless Siamese'.
Genuine LOL.

So many of those rumours about SMG being 'difficult' and 'a diva' make sense now, don't they? She and Charisma weren't in the In Crowd and they were punished for it. No wonder SMG made that statement supporting her.
On the plus side, this makes me feel a WHOLE lot better about the reports that he had real issues controlling the main cast on the two Avengers films... >:D

I seem to remember her talking about finding things difficult - how she always had problems learning her lines and Joss was a perfectionist. I don't know that she put the same emphasis on it that she does now - more that it was stressful for her because of her own shortcomings.

*nods* 'Difficult to work with' is quite the code...

I HAD NOT SEEN THAT. Thank you, that made me smile!

Poor Charisma. ._.
When that originally came out (2014), I was amused but I also felt a little sorry for Joss because it must have been frustrating to have that happen so much that it's a PRIVATE JOKE between the cast. Now I don't feel sorry for him AT ALL. I just think "YESSSS, MAKE HIM SUFFER, BOYS! >DD" and the image of Joss pathetically threatening these movie stars that 'you won't get your close up' while they blithely ignore him and then openly mock him in press junkets is glorious~. See also this quote. Must have been a real shock when he encountered a cast who wouldn't dance to his tune because they were all established stars...

This was a common theme - I remember a podcast with Marc Blucas where he talked about Joss correcting him from 'I'm' to 'I am' (or the other way around). Obviously there are different ways of doing this, and bullies tend to bully. :(

Totally. The Peter Principle in action.

Lovely quote. And yeah...

Wow. :X Chris Evans has talked openly about disagreeing with Joss on various lines in "Age of Ultron", I wonder how Joss dealt with that...

I'm guessing Hollywood A-listers were less compliant.

The lines stayed the film in so it's not like Evans managed to get them changed but I remember being surprised at the time that he'd fought so hard.
Iiinteresting.
And yes, Blucas is a sweetheart!
