I think it's the Trickster archetype. Both the Doctor and the Master are archetypal Tricksters. Tricksters are always morally ambiguous, but the Doctor is an unusual Trickster because he needs to believe that he himself is good. But how can he believe in his own goodness if the Other Trickster is evil? He can't. Now that's an interesting thought. Have you read 'the naming of things'?
