River Song and agency

Hmmm. I may be right and it is River in the vault. I'd be happy if that were true. Personally, I was not happy with how it ended for her -- it seemed to me that she was trapped in the Library and it was not her choice. The Doctor put her there. And she is stuck in a loop...of sorts. For eternity.

This actually connects with the on-going theme regarding lack of agency. Every single episode seems to be about someone being trapped by someone else, either for personal gain, money, corporate gain or some other reason.

River is trapped in the Library by the Doctor to save her life. He downloaded her to the library mainframe. Someone is locked in the Vault, by the Doctor, and guarded there.

* Pilot -- Bill's friend is taken and trapped by the puddle so the puddle can escape earth. Or the puddle feels trapped on earth and convinces Bill's friend to join with it and escape. Bill equally feels trapped in her lifestyle and in her Mom's flat, and the Doctor feels trapped on Earth.

* Smile -- the people on the planet are trapped by the robots and forced to be happy. The robots in turn were enslaved by the people. The robots start killing the people and taking back their agency. The people are now at the mercy of the robots. To stop it, they compromise with the robots and reboot them.

* Thin Ice - a big fish monster is trapped by a nobleman who feeds it humans for fuel. It has no agency, no choices.
The Doctor is convinced by Bill to free it.

* Knock Knock - students trapped in a house. The landlord has taken choice away from his mother, and treats her like a daughter. He has taken her agency and feeds her the students, trapping both inside the house. He does this to save her life. She's become something else...but he loves her anyway. (Actually this episode has a lot of references to Forest of the Dead and Silence in the Library, I found it to be very similar to those episodes in some respects...because the bugs acted like the piranhas, and people were made part of the house, or in Library, part of the library.) The mother/son in this episode have echoes of the Doctor/River Song in Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead.

At the end of the episode we find out that the person in the vault is someone the Doctor knows and cares for, and is playing the piano. (I thought it was she, but can't remember if they used a personal pronoun.)

* Oxygen - again lack of agency, people are trapped in their suits. No control. Bill in particular is trapped, and as you state this has definite echos to River in her spacesuit in Impossible Astronaut and Silence in the Library. River is set up to kill the Doctor, she's programmed to do it, but she fights it. Here, Bill is set up to be a zombie to kill, but fights it.

And now the Doctor is blind...so also agency.
