ETA: And then I saw this River Song post on Tumblr (about who she is and whose she is) and now I'm a bit of a mess. Please, do yourself a favour and go read it. ♥
That River Song post is pure gold - it helped me understand even more clearly why I love her, especially the thoughts on how she walks in and out of places built to imprison her at her own will. I love writing that makes me understand things in a new way or helps me understand my own feelings more clearly.
And the idea that, whatever the reasons River was created, she has become something that isn't intended for the male gaze, but for US - that resonated with me so strongly.
The argument that we want to be River not because we want to catch a man, or live in a man's shadow, but because we want to be awesome, is even more strikingly true.
The original post to which this post was a reaction made me sad; it's a man trying to get past his own sexism, and Getting It Wrong, bless him. There was also a reaction to this post in which someone (I didn't check to see where on the gender spectrum they were) just rejected River in a way that made me sad and angry - the writer calls River two-dimensional and I'm left breathless at the lack of observational acuity. Mind you, it descends into I haaate Moooofffattt!!!!!! so I shouldn't even pay attention.
how she walks in and out of places built to imprison her at her own will I had a whole lot of meta at one point about River Song and boxes and how she breaks out of *and* puts herself into them.
We never quite turn out how mom and dad imagined. Well... There is a certain argument to be made that River is EXACTLY how her parents would imagine their offspring. ;)
That River Song post is pure gold Isn't it just? I was all incoherent.
especially the thoughts on how she walks in and out of places built to imprison her at her own will. As Promethia said - she's all about boxes.
I love writing that makes me understand things in a new way or helps me understand my own feelings more clearly. Me too. <3
And the idea that, whatever the reasons River was created, she has become something that isn't intended for the male gaze, but for US - that resonated with me so strongly. Oh god, this. Heck, she spends her 'first' episode in a spacesuit...
The argument that we want to be River not because we want to catch a man, or live in a man's shadow, but because we want to be awesome, is even more strikingly true. I showed my 9 year old the news and she was THRILLED. (They all adore River.)

Thanks so much for sharing that Tumblr link. It sums up why I love this character so much, and does it in a way that's incredibly lucid and coherent.
I think Kaffyr also has it right that a lot of people who dislike her also dislike Moff in general. (I'm so looking forward to the wank that will ensue whenever Moff leaves and suddenly certain elements of the fandom will decide he was the Best Thing Ever and use him as a cricket bat to bash the new showrunner around).
Anyway, I'm so thrilled that River gets to be in a Christmas episode! And that Kingston and Capaldi will get to work together.

Oh, when that happens, I will be right there with the popcorn, and I don't even LIKE wank.

I still can't quite believe all the people going 'OMG RTD WAS WONDERFUL AND EVERYTHING HE DID WAS AMAZING!!', because I remember when he was in charge and NOBODY liked him. Like, there was me and 2 others, sitting in a little corner saying 'Actually, I don't think he's a racist, self-hating homophobe who has a problem with women...'
Anyway, I'm so thrilled that River gets to be in a Christmas episode! And that Kingston and Capaldi will get to work together. I honestly have no idea how to feel. My mood image captures my emotions quite well...

Anything else (story details etc) will definitely be cut, but just the news itself I felt wanted sharing. :)
